Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me with this problem... :)

Ok I have a problem with my DSL and can't seem to get it straightened out as for contacting my ISP I seem to keep getting the runaround. I call the DSL tech dept and while talking to them they do a line test and it tells them that my line is failing badly. They write up a trouble ticket and turn it over to the Line Dept who then does a line check and finds nothing wrong.

Ok here is what my problem is and I appreciate anyhelp that anyone can give me and yes I have even powered down my DSL modem and "reset" it.

When not on the phone and just on the computer surfing the internet speed is greatly reduced (its S L O W very S L O W). My display on my phone will read line in use and 2 lights on my DSL modem (the DSL light and Internet light) will go off and then they come back on flashing until steady.

When we are actually on the phone the internet speed is faster.

I have my DSL and my Dishnetwork (TV satellite) thru my phone company SBC and we have always saw the line in use from time to time on our phone display but nothing really major as far as to whats happening now.

I should add that now this major slow down has happened after we put our 2nd computer online. We have the computers hooked up via router with Internet Cable from DSL Modem going to router, Cable 1 from router to Computer 1 and Cable 2 from router to Computer 2.

I hope I haven't confused anyone and if you need more answers to help me figure this out please just ask and I will do my best in answering. I just feel like I am on dial up instead of DSL. :(

Please note that both computers are up to date in Windows updates, my AV is up to date, I do frequent scans for adware etc.. and general clean up of my computers.

    Hi

I had a very similar problem and the cause was the sat. t.v. connection. When I disconnected the phone line from the t.v. my speed increased.

I can not unplug the phone line from the back of the DSL unit we are on a dual receiver which is one that controls 2 tvs via one receiver. We were informed that if the line is not connected 24/7 we will incurr additional charges..

    Hi

You will only be disconnected for a short while to se if your speed improves. Another thing you could do is to contact the sat. company, tell them the problem and say you would like to test the line by disconnecting for a short period of time.

I can do that but really it is strange because the internet speed is faster when the phone is in use. I have also noticed that its slightly faster when the Dishnetwork sat receiver is on. So go figure you would think that when those items are in use that the internet speed would be slower not faster..
I will give it a shot of uplugging the Sat from the DSL line and see what happens and let you know.
Also, if anyone else has a solution I am willing to try just about anything as I am at a total loss as to this because to me its backwards when the net is slow when things are NOT in use but faster when things ARE in use.
    Thanks for any help

I have had problems twice with my DSL. The 1st time we checked a bunch of stuff, pinged some things, and of course rebooted the modem/router, and the computer, etc. I think there was some problem on their end and they changed some setting? The second time (a few months later), I spent over an hour talking to some dumbass on the phone, and he had me changing all kinds of settings, and upon reboot (for like the 10th time), I got the blue screen of death!! :( He then stated that he was going to put in his report that I couldn't connect to the internet (slow), I called in, I have computer problems and need to contact the manufacturer. I then proceeded to tear him a new a$$hole, saying that I didn't have any problems until he got ahold of it, and stated that my laptop wouldn't connect still, and of course he wanted to go there (I hung up). Anyway I have Adaptec "Go Back", and I reverted the drive to before we touched anything, and all was well again (no blue screen). I wound up talking to some other guy (when I got home from work), and wasted about 20-30 min. talking to him, and he finally said he would send a technician out, but the stipulation (sp) was that if it was on their end, they would pay, and if it was on my end, I would have to pay (I knew it wasn't). It wound up being some filter out on the street for my phone line, you have an analog filter (for the phone), and a digital (??) filter for the dsl stuff (something like that), and ever since they fixed that I haven't had any problems!! ;)

sorry, about the book!! - sosaman

oh, and the technician called me like 10 minutes after I had talked to the 2nd guy, to quiz me a little about my situation, and he knew what he was talking about, and figured I knew what I was talking about, etc., before they sent somone out. - sos

I unhooked the phone jack into the back of my Dishnetwork receiver and my speed is still slow.
I now have a tech coming out on Tuesday of next week to check the jacks at no charge to me :):)
If he does not find anything wrong I will mention the filter that is to be outside..
Thanks for all the replies and once I get a tech here I will post back as to if the problem was solved or not and what it was..

I live in Michigan and my DSL is provided by SBC (formerly Ameritech).
SBC is my phone company for Local and Long Distance services and I also got my DSL and Dishnetwork through them. My DSL is called SBC Yahoo! DSL and my Dishnetwork is called SBC Dishnetwork.

I ran speedtest found at dslreports and a test through SBC Yahoo! DSL Internet Throughput Test and my tests came back that my download thru DSLreports was 40Kbps and through the SBC test it was 13.24Kbps.
I am supposed to get a minimum of 1.5Mbps for download time thru my DSL provider SBC..
I called SBC DSL tech support and they ran a test and showed my line is failing and are writing up a trouble ticket which is my 3rd one I told him that I have had 2 other trouble tickets and both times the tickets have been turned over to the Line Dept and they run a test there and don't find anything wrong. The guy I talked to tonight said that the problem will be resolved this time because its obvious that my speeds are at a dialup speed when I am supposed to be getting min of 1.5Mbps DSL ...
The tech that is coming out in the morning is a phone line tech to check my jacks but they will more then most likely send a Internet Tech out this week as well..
Hope this improves cuz I can't stand going from fast internet to slow creeping crawling internet.. :(
Thanks to all that have replied.. will keep yall posted as things unfold on this end..
    SW :)

ps to MiDGeT I love that wolf blanket.. :) tc..

Ok Phone tech was here this morning and both phone jacks worked just fine..
DSL tech came later and was here for awhile said that we lost speed between the wall jack and the phone line we had to run from there to go into the back of our DSL Modem.
The DSL tech installed a dsl jack and now the speed is back as to where its supposed to be (knock on wood).
Thanks for all the replies everyone..
