On-line alternative to a server?

    Hi-

I'm posting this on multiple boards as I'm not quite sure where it belongs, sorry for the redundancy.

First, let me say that I am server ignorant. I have a client who has a small office of 4 employees. Currently, they have a small server in the office (I think he said it was around 20 GB). I know they use it for document storage and remote retrieval. It is beginning to fail them, plus they have to dial-in to it to access it remotely. Anyhow, they want to replace it. I was thinking they may be better off with a virtual server (hope I'm using the right word). I found some companies such as APlus.net, ThePlanet.com, IWeb8.com that offer the storage for a monthly fee, but they seem really expensive.

Is it possible that they could use PCNow, LogMeIn, GoToMyPC or LapLink as a solution or should they get a new server? They have no in-house tech support, so would need to pay someone to maintain the server.

Thanks for any thoughts on this,
    Anne

I am a bit confused as to what you are trying to do. What OS are they using, and is the server onsite or elsewhere. And what do you mean by dial into it? Like a VPN?

If you are just wanting a central storage computer, why not just build them a cheap computer with a large drive (320GB Drive for under $90 at NewEgg). If you just need a file server onsite and are running XP, just network them together and share the drive on the server computer.

Sorry if I am way off on what you want.

Thanks for responding. I'll try to clarify: They currently have an on-site server that they use for document storage and a couple of software applications. I believe that it's used in the office, but most importantly they use it for remote access (which they have to dial-in to - don't know about VPN). They are running NT - but I will be upgrading them to XP Pro.

The central storage computer you suggested sounds like a great idea. I understand that XP Pro (I only use XP HE) has a remote desktop feature. Would this enable them to access the data and applications when they are away from the office?

Thanks for your help - it's invaluable.

Yes, the remote works great, but you need a static IP, and only one computer can connect at a time as far as I know. I think the Linux os allows multiple connections.

I need a static IP for the host computer? Hopefully I can handle that.

What about PCNow, LogMeIn, GoToMyPC or LapLink as an alternative to Remote Desktop? Why pay monthly fees to them if I can get Remote Desktop for free?

    Thanks again,
    Anne
