I read on the MS technet website that it's possible to open a port (or rather: add a port to the exceptions) in the windows firewall by means of the NETSH command
my problem is that this command only seems to be available in SP2 and I cannot install SP2

is there maybe some other command that I could use in a batchfile to open a port in the firewall settings without having to go through control panel > network > firewall > settings > blahblahblah ?

or, alternatively, is there someone who could maybe write a simple application or script or something that will open port 5631 (TCP) just by running it?

The old xp firewall was totally useless.
Most likely the netsh command wont work there.
I heard about netsh to configure firewall only after sp2 was released.
Did you check the help and support option from the start menu?

ok let me clearify: I can NOT use netsh because the firewall command is NOT present in netsh before SP2

I think netsh firewall command is not there because you do not have sp2 firewall.
SP2 firewall has completely different features from old xp fw.
    Why not install sp2?

Windows XP only has a firewall once Service Pack 2 has been installed. Are you asking about how to open ports on a 3rd-party firewall like ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or Kerio?

Yes, is there a reason why Service Pack 2 can't or won't install?

well the reason for my question is because I'm helping someone to open that port on his pc. he knows jack *** about computers and therefore it's an almost impossible task to guide him through all those control panels and windows to open a port in the windows firewall settings (even more so because he's not running an English version of windows).
that is why I need something easy like opening an application or running a batchfile

and yes, I AM talking about the windows firewall WITHOUT SP2
windows XP *does* include a firewall in it's original release, it's just not turned on by default and a little more difficult to find

the other day I installed a program that added a port exception in the windows firewall, so I know it's possible
(don't remember the name of the program I installed, though)

and why not install SP2....well, if you can imagen explaining to a noob how to just simply download and extract a zipfile for 2 whole hours, you'll know what an absolute nightmare it would be to guide him through the installation of SP2 ;)
