ok, I hate, hate, HATE technology. I just want the hardware and software to work without the crap I get from it and have no patience when i tell the machine to stop and it goes, or to go and it stops.

so today i went to use my spreadsheet in open office, and there's a new update. should make it run better, right? worst nightmare ever. got stuck in a download loop. repair wouldn't repair it. so i uninstalled it. but it didn't uninstall. and when it "uninstalled" it snatched one of my program icons from the desktop, which one, I have no idea. so my computer's a mess, I've done what i know to do to rectify it short of restore, and i'm in a huge snit.

I haven't shut down, but not sure i want to restore. not sure i want to do anything but shove it and microsoft and all the starry eyed idiots who build things to break through my bay window! sorry if I'm snarky, but i've put up fairly quietly with crap like this from software and hardware for 20 years, and i've had it. when you make something, have some pride in your work, it's not a piece of trash unless you build it to be a piece of trash. knowingly or otherwise. I haven't seen quality in the product in 40 years. that's a choice, people! how dare anyone do such a rotten job of things it fowls up another person's computer?

I tried to fill out O.O.'s survey, but it was broke. then i tried to look up the problem on their site, and they couldn't identify it. then i tried to message them, but the sign up was broken. and in the whole process, i lost my old files from the older O.O.. I'm so mad i may just throw the laptop away and never buy another technological item again. i have no respect left for the people who are ruining things out of carelessness, greed and selfishness. putting stuff out half made, or poorly made, and charging for it as though it's an actual functioning product. creating stuff and then expecting us to fix the bugs and find the issues for you. pay us tech fees and wages if you want us to find the bugs for you! or give the items out free to beta testers so they're not a piece of crap when they go out on the market! enough of that garbage, you don't think! start thinking!

I haven't used OO, but I have used LibreOffice for a while. I never had a problem with it, except that it was not 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. At the end I went back to MS Office.

P.S. most of the OO developers went to LibreOffice when Oracle took over, so I doubt that OO is still able to deliver quality software.

I know that the answer to "How do I fix my stove?" is not "You're using the wrong stove", but sometimes....

pwillener's comments are right on. OO is still around, but not nearly as robust as Libre Office, LO, which BTW looks and feels almost exactly the same. It is being actively developed

Other posters have expressed concern about LO's dependency on Java and the security issues that brings with it. You can turn off Java in LO, but some features will not be available to you. I have read that the developers are working to transition away from Java. See this for more info on what LO features require Java and what your options are:

    https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Java

I am using LO with java unticked in the options, it does what I need, word processing, PDF export. I don't know what your needs are, but it may be worth a test run...

    Hi

I tried this one out Kingsoft Office Suit 2012 a while back for a friend and it worked perfectly for me, I do use MS Office 2013 personally but the test of it was good and worth a try.

It is just a suit for an equivalent to Word, Powerpoint and Excel.

Did not know that oracle had taken over OO, when did that happen? They also just bought out a local software co. Right Now Technologies, lots of employees are now leaving there/

Switched to OO after 18 years using Quattro, Can't find how to automatically copy a cell from page 1 to a different cell number in page 2. internal hepl function is about worthless.

buzzbbee...don't throw away your latptop. It will find you again anyway, trust me.

Don't hate technology though. Not to water down the issue, but hardware has come a long way. At least that's one thing to rejoice over.

You're right though in the ultimate sense about software. Yet, there are some good things happening on that front, too. Problem is we need a BIG breakthrough. I agree we need something that is perfect in concept...start to finish...from office software. And we need an OS that takes into account ALL the issues of file management. Seriously, MS puts MY DOCS in the Docs and Settings tree? That's not practical. Docs should be on the desktop in a separate folder. I mean I get the back up argument, but the trouble is all those crazy folders and the huge mess that ends up there. If there were an OS that took seriously docs (and games with a gaming platform and mode), we could have things like folders that we create ourselves that find all the files of a type automatically and place shortcuts in the folder. Developers could put those crazy folders in another location, and we could have highly developed folders for music and video that enable us to create and save playlists and organize the songs and videos so we could view them by file type, etc.

This is my theory...if MS or someone will step up and put file management first in an OS, developers will take the cue and buckle down to write the kind of software we are REALLY looking for.

I've been at it for a long time too buzzbee. I know what you mean. We need someone to step forward and take on the challenge of creating a perfect thing, especially with the offics and OS softwares. My comparison...Coca-Cola. Just make a bottle of Coke MS or someone, and let's get on with the game. Trying to do things with OSes like they do with cars in the auto industry just isn't going to work. That product design methodology for software just won't ever deliver what users expect. But let's face it...what are they after in the auto industry..."SAFER"? What about just "SAFE"!

Thanks for the post buzzbee. You echo alot of my sentiments through the years with this post...

That does not make very much sense since the Desktop is also located in Documents and Settings. Also, large Desktop items will make Windows startup slower.

I believe it shouldn't be in the same tree with Settings either. I worked out a tree I thought would work sometime back. Settings would get their own tree with only elements of the desktop in there. Documents would be in a folder in the Desktop folder on the C drive. Anyway, I was satisfied that it's very doable...

pwillener...My docs is on the desktop, with all it's elements...no?...anyway they don't all have to go into RAM on start up. Basically, anything is doable no matter what MS, etc. say...
