    Hi,

I want to download openoffice, and there are two versions, with JRE and without. I'm running winxp, so what should I do? If I already have Java, which I think it's disabled or something, from all that spyware crap, will it mess up my system to do the JRE, or will it just say, "you already have java", and skip that step... OR, should I do the uninstall windows/install sun java as listed on the anti-spyware tutorial? (don't say that, I hate doing extra steps...:) )

    thanks for any help,
    bean

Personally, I would ditch the Microsoft Java (which, IIRC, was dropped from the Windows installation CD from Service Pack 1a onwards) and replace it with this...

... as it will ultimately be safer in the long run.

To use any of the Java features in OpenOffice.org (of which, admittedly, there are few), you would need to use Sun Java anyway. The OpenOffice.org installer will search for any existing Sun Java installations on your computer and if it doesn't find any, it will simply ignore those features.

    Hope this helps.
