Ive been trying to get a game I got a while back to work and have had no luck thus far, except for one thing. Its been stated that the ports on my modem are closed and hence the website for the accounts and the games login end page does not show up except for a webpage error. My question would be how do I get into my modem to open the ports so everything can get through?

do you have a router or are you attached with one computer directly to the ISP's modem? Look for a setting called DMZ, some routers will walk you through the setup for that.

If you look over on the gaming forum there are usually a few posts about ports near the top.

Sorry if I'm a little vague, I wanted to send you toward the right path this evening. If you need more help with the specifics, your router or modem (if you are plugged into it) model will help.

Well I have actually had a laptop and a computer (at seperate times) hooked directly to the modem (Model: 6211-I1 ADSL2+ Router) and they still have gave me a webpage error for the site for the games account. So I have came to figure its a modem port problem rather then a router problem it could stil be both, however thus far I have track it to the modem to be the root problem. So if possible I'd like to start there and work back to the top. The game is FFXIV if it helps any, also when I tested my 80 UDP port I believe it stated it was close so I thought it might be a start to figure out the issue. Hence me needing to get right into the may source of the ports to open them. thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, I've moved this to the games forum in hopes that someone will be able to better answer your question.

I doubt it since I have a post there specificly for the game itself, which has lead me to needing to work with the modem since I know now its not the game itself or the router. However if anyone can help I'll be greatful.

Followed you over to see if the gamers could walk you through the port and DMZ settings. I suggested it since most gamers have done it.

You have been in the modem's setup page (http://192.168.1.1) and logged in as the admin? The DMZ host is under Advanced setup > NAT > DMZ host. Enter the IP of your computer here.

I thought this looked familiar! Welcome back :)

I took a half hour and did some serious digging around in a couple of MMO sites I frequent, and I think I have found something useful: The list of ports FFXIV wants to use.

For the UDP traffic, open ports 55296 – 55551. For TCP traffic open ports 54992 – 55551, and also port 80 and port 443. All ports must be set to allow both inbound and outbound traffic. If you don't know how to do this, I'll see if I can find some screenshots or other info that can help you.

If opening the ports doesn't work, next step would be to try the DMZ suggestion handygal gave you.

Please make sure your security tools are up to date and your machine is protected, as putting your machine in a dmz, effectively puts it out straight on the net, loosing many of the security reasons you have a router in the first place.

Thanks for the backup! I had a warning in there that using DMZ is only for testing purposes. Once sure that it's the modem/router, can work back to the ports and maybe get the other router into the mix too. Error for UDP on port 80 is a strange one, that's why I suggested DMZ first. Didn't want to test a bunch of ports if there is a secondary issue. I over-edited this morning.

Being on the DMZ should be just for the test.

Thanks again Mimsy and Colemanguy, don't want the OP to get in trouble in the hours between posts or *gasp* not come back when it works!

thanks everyone for the suggestions I'll try them after I get off work (about 6pm) then I'll post what happens. If possible can anyone tell me step by step on the DMZ? I tried it once before on my own after someone fromanother forums suggested it, however I have the feeling it didnt work due to I was just going into it blindly. So with proper steps I'd like to try it so know I did it right thanks again everyone.

I'll see what I can do about whipping up some directions for you. I'm at work right now and I'm going out after work, but if you don't mind waiting until tomorrow I'll get something put together for you.

ok will do, I might mess around with some things, but as for DMZ I'll wait for the instruction so I know for sure Im doing it right. Thanks in advance

If you want DMZ instructions I think I'll wait until we know if you need them or not. Just to clarify what both handygal and Colemanguy have already said, putting your computer in DMZ puts it outside of the router's protection and is not a good long-term solution to a single game's connection problems.

I have my Xbox 360 and my PS3 in DMZ, but none of my gaming computers. The reason I would never do that with a gaming PC is that I also have my tax info and my online banking on them, and it's not worth the risk. I honestly would think more than twice before permanently setting my computer to DMZ for a game. In my opinion, it's the game developer's responsibility to provide a set number of ports for router configuration. No MMO is worth putting your PC at risk.

Forgot to say, let me know if you need help with those ports! :)

I'll write the whole instruction and link you the page with the screenshot in the morning. It's not going to look too different from what I said earlier. Do you have ip for your computer? Make a note of it to enter into the router.

To set your computer to temporarily be the DMZ Host

Run ipconfig and make note of your ip
    - open a browser and go to http://192.168.1.1 (default)
    - the default user and password is admin admin
    - on the left hand side go to Advanced setup > NAT > DMZ host
There is an image of in the manual here
    - Enter the IP of your computer in the field, save/apply and test your connection now.

ok well heres an update. I haven't did the DMZ setup, but I unhooked the router and hooked directly to the modem itself, 192.168.1.1 does not allow me into the modem when hooked directly, its just for my router when its hooked . I dont have a NAT seection for my router, but I do have a DMZ tab under App & games. I'll try going through it later tonight. Anyways when hooked straight into the modem (paradyne 6211-I1 DSLA2+) I still get the webpage error. If this info helps any, my question would be what should I try next? ISP contact does nothing for me did that one already I still saying there are ports on the modem itself blocked hence not allowing access, and so the quest continues...

look up the ip for your computer (at the command prompt, ipconfig) and enter it into the dmz tab under apps and games. If it's a port, being on the dmz will bypass it.

Once you know that it's in the modem we can work on the sets of ports that Mimsy found and get your game up without the dmz. Let us know if the dmz works for you.

I'm considering bowing out of this thread since handygal clearly knows a lot more about networking than I do. I'll lurk about though, since I'm curious to see how this ends, and hopefully I'll learn something from it as well. :)

Ok just went and did the DMZ and I still am getting the webpage error. So DMZ did not work, I am going to switch back out of it for now. Hopefully we can keep this thread around even after this problem is fixed so that others will finally have a guide on what to do if this happens to them. Anyways as stated before DMZ did not work and I am still getting the webpage error. So the quest continues.

Well it seems that the port opening will be yet another attempt, but I wondering if it will work or not after all the things I have tried. Another question I have wondered about is it actually possible to go directly into the modem through command or anything cause what I am thinking at the point is the ports are getting opened on the router but not the modem itself. any thoughts, and the quest continues..
