Opening .asd files with Shell Commor files

FYI - OS is Vista. A friend was trying to insert a pic into a Word doc., and Word kicked her out. We found the document recovered, but it was now an .asd file. When I tired to open it, it asked for a program to open it with. The properties of the file said that Windown Shell Commor could open it. I googled that and it is all very confusing. Is there a specific shell file that will open .asd files? I found one website that had a free commor download, but all it did was scan for problems, then said that to clean the errors, it cost. All of these computers are at the Community Center, and I'm not paying for their stuff.

How do you know which commor file to download anyway? Any ideas?

 

Can see why you're confused... my eyes glazed over reading the MS KBs on recovery of asd files and I've used word since I was a kid.

Try a "save as" a .doc to your desktop and see if you can get to it that way. Don't touch the original file, since this might not work. If it asks what to open with pick Word.

Also, scan the file prior, not sure why Word got finicky but could be a virus that caused the corruption. Just going by past experience, be careful.

It's a Auto Recovery File but if not saved under another name will be deleted from what I understand. So if your friend did not save the file on the next opening of Word not sure if you can still recover it with Word... but worth a try.

Word does create some temporary files while you're working that are copies of the document, but these are deleted when the file is closed."
