It would help if you could tell us which types of files you are having trouble opening. Way back when Microsoft was developing Windows they decided to hide file-type extensions because they thought it looked too technical and they wanted PCs to be "friendly". But it actually makes working with files more difficult when you have to guess which type of information they contain.

Try going to Control Panel>Folder Options>and under the view tab uncheck the box for "Hide extensions for known file-types". (On XP you can get to Folder Options in any Explorer window under the Tools heading.

Then post back and let us know which types of files you are having trouble choosing the appropriate program to use to open them. (extensions are the .jpg, .bmp, .txt etc.)

And get and run cCleaner from Top Freeware pics. That'll get rid of those temps.
If you don't trust the person you are letting use your computer, then why?
At least next time, set up a user account with limited privileges, and password your admin account! I can't tell you how many problems I've seen from second party users.

I create an image. I loaned my old notebook to a friend because she had a knee replacement and could not do steps to get to her computer. I set the computer up in her living room near the recliner so she could at least get and receive email from family and friends.
When the laptop was returned, rather than try and clean it, I simply restored the image I created before I loaned it to her.

    plodr,

Will that work if the other user infects the computer?

He basically just said he wiped out everything she did and returned the computer to the exact state it was in when he have it to her, so yeah. Anything that got on it would be gone.

If someone is using your LT that you don't trust, then don't let them use it !

Yes. Every trace of whatever happened in the time the person used the computer is gone and it is returned exactly to that point in time when the image was made.
