Opening Files

I have as used computer and I am trying to open a file to download of the hard drive to a disc in the writeable drive. The file is in the shared Winmx folder. When I try, I get the message: "You do not have permission to open this file . See the owner or adminestrator." I have seen this message before. This file is on drive D which is on the same disc as drive C - the disc was partittioned to allow the full use of a newly installed hard drive and drive D is saved from the old drive. Also, whenever Windows is loading it asks for my network password. I checked the folder properties of the folder winmx and it is shared and not read only. Win 98se. Is this a file configuration setting or a network setting I must change? Thanks, Mike.

 

Did this computer belong to a domain network beforehand? Sounds like you have some policy restrictions which is stopping you from opening certain kinds of files...

 

I have no idea. I can say that I had win 98se reinstalled after I the old win 98 se was partially erased ( bad cadware uninstall). Seems like a total reinstall of the os would undo any previous settings except I must still hit cancel when my password is requested as windows is booting.

 

Sounds like you want to do a clean install... repair is a bad idea generally..
But im sure there is a work around your problem wait till someone with a brain comes along
