Opening rar.files

Iv'e tried divx, winzip,k-lite,please help newbie

Uninstall Winzip first, it ceased to be useful several years ago IMO and is only kept alive by every PC mag in the world including it on their cover mounted CD/DVD's

Tugzip as mentioned in the link is OK, but it's a confusing interface for a newbie, and without being disrespectful, if you've tried k-lite and DivX to open a RAR file, then you need something a bit simpler to use.

Use Winrar is the obvious answer www.rarlabs.com
It's not free, but you can use it freely for as long as you like by just clicking away the nag (to buy) screen at start up. It's a very similar interface to Winzip, so you should find it easy to use.

Just double click the RAR file you want to open, and use the 'Extract' icon at the top - DONT click the file or folders in the archive first, or you could end up extracting only part of the files/folders - unless that's what you want of course.

Just use the Extract icon straight away, and you'll get all files/folders by default. Pick 'Desktop' or 'My Documents' as the destination folder - and try to use a different folder from the RAR file to avoid confusion

Occasionally you'll get badly packed files (not in a folder) so you might get a whole bunch of files sprawled all over your desktop. If you're one of these people who has an untidy desktop overflowing with shortcut icons, that will make the extracted files difficult to see, so it's best to create a temporary folder first to use with archives - something like RARtemp in My Documents maybe

 

7Zip is a good, fast working app and free. As you can see (in BILLMCC66's link) it's the choice of a few folks here.
