Operating System Not Found Message

I am running into a problem. I have COMPAQ 2200 Laptop whose Hard Drive recently failed. I had the Hard Drive replace with a new one: but, I cannot get the Windows XP Operating system to function. I have loaded it onto the hard drive successfully; however, when I try log back onto the system, I get a message flashed accross my screen briefly stating Operating System Not Found. When I use Advanquest FixIt Utilities, it shows that the operating system in on the C-drive. The hard drive seems to be OK. Is this BIOS bad? What can I do to fix the BIOS? Is the laptop beyond repair? Do I need a new motherboard?

 

Have you checked all connections????

 

How did you load the OS on the HD. Did yo use a standard XP installation disc or a Compaq recovery disc?
