Operating Systems Probs - Missing icons, taskbar, start button...etc

Hi,

I have a dell inspiron 5500 pentium IV 2.6 Mhz, windows xp home edition. And I currently have these problems:

every time i start the laptop at the first time, these oddnesses occur:
- Icons, Taskbar and Start Menu are missing
- Background wallpaper visible.

All i can see is just my background wallpaper, that's all. Then when i restart it, it all goes back to normal again.
So in other words, I'd have to start the laptop twice (turn it on/start>turn it off>start/turn it on again), in order to get the normal appearance.

Please help if these kind of problems can easily be solved, much thanks before!

Does it do this in Safe Mode or not?

 

my friend had this exact same problem a while back...his laptop was completely taken over by this virus called beavis(.####). anyway, it had corrupted his explorer file. does your virus scanner find anything when you run it in safe mode?

Yes, you're probably right. Because, before it was infected with bunch of viruses. Then after i did some cleaning and maintenance, it has finally been back to working good again now, except on that one problem that still stays.
So in other words, all of the virus scannings and cleaning didn't affect and fix this problem at all.

 

yip. sounds like spyware/virus...possibly the beavis.4350 virus and your Explorer.exe might be infected. this one is a real bugger. i can't really tell you how to fix it, but the dudes in spyware specific will.

when we got my friend's computer clean, it just needed a repair with the OS disks.
