I was considering buying one of these considering its not expensive in price and wanted something to mess around with.

My main uses for this would be watching videos, and just web surfing along with other features that may be possible with this thing.

My questions are is the new revision B model too slow ? Would does it function via netflix streaming.

Or maybe perhaps someone can recommend a similar like device with more capabilities but being able to tweak it too. I was hoping for a vga port because most of my spare monitors are vga only

You have to read and read and read. Better keep reading and get one of those IPTV boxes. If you have the patience to play with the raspberry, buy it, better get a kit with that, so you do not have toscamble looking for the card, the power supply, etc. Let us know what you decide.;)

It's been a while since I've used mine bit it had no trouble playing even HD video. Netflix uses Silverlight, which means you'll need WINE. You can try it but I suspect that may be beyond the Pi's capabilities.

Agree with what's been said, get a mini pc so you have a choice of OS and media formats, unless you can code your own media player from scratch.

Got one for Christmas but haven't got to grips with it yet, decided to leave the computers behind, move out of my parents place, go to the gym and try and find a wife.:-D

I ended up changing my mind about getting raspberry

I wanted something quite small for someone that was barely going to learn to use a computer and at the same time have something they can use for simple-mediocre tasks.

What about this mini pc ?

Granted this pc would be around $300 with memory and an ssd hd
