I was working for an IT company here in New York and im wondering if you guys think i was underpaid with $11.50/hr for what i was doing... i pasted the recent employment from my resume... I feel as if i was underpaid but from the looks of my job duties what are your opinions?... The Company is not very big but have been around for 26 years. Im looking for insight on those who are more experienced and have more knowledge on this than i do.. Thank you.

Its probably hard to say unless you live in that region and know what another job of the same level pays.
In the UK, for that job in anywhere 'cept London (which is inflated cost of living) I'd say it was a decent salary for what that job entailed from your description.

    Jobs (IMO) pay more typically because of a mix of the following;
the skills they require are difficult to get,
because the experience they draw on comes from a specific highly skilled background,
there is a high level of stress involved
there is a lot of responsibility within the job.

I haven't personally done your job so I can't comment on how much you think those attributes apply to what you did. You have to offset those factors against what another job of that calibre pays in your geographical area.

    That does seem pretty low.

You can get that for flipping burgers at McDonalds. (and at least you get a discount on food :) )

No offence but I'm hoping that you are. After I leave the Navy next year I was looking for a bit more than that. By chance do you have any Certifications?

Thank you all or your responses. I agree with the last poster that $20 - $30/Hr is just about right. im better off with another job because of the very low pay. Also, i worked so hard and got no raise. I remember working on a huge project on Apple IBooks, within 2 weeks i put in 130 HOURS and NO im not exaggerating, i literally worked 130 within 2 weeks, the check was good but at 11.50/hr... making very good money means working like a savage. my next job will be no less than $25/hr. Oh and to one of the posters asking about Certs.. I have my A+ and working on Network + and Linux OS Certs.

I am currently working on my A+, and my advisor told me that here in the Chicago region...A+ alone should pull you about $25,000 to $30,000 per year. Which if you go by the average 2000 hour work year...that breaks down to approximately $12.00 to $15.00 per hour.

I am going to take the Network+ next, followed by the MCDSE and Security+, and my advisor said that should be putting me into the uppers of the top 40's to low 50's per year.

But that is for Chicagoland region...might be a bit different in your area.

The A+ is an entry level Cert and $15/hr seems right. The other Certs you mentioned are good to get also. Ive posted my resume on various websites and got some job offers ranging between $25/hr and $35/hr.. No luck since the offers were not in the New York City area. One thing that i have noticed is that Experience is what really lands you a job and at times.. its who you know not what you know<~~ example of this is a friend of mine does same work i do for another company and making $12 more than i do because he knew the president of the company. like i said before... i will not take less than $20 - $25/hr on my next job.

if you're in NYC , and as soon as you add "consulting" into your resume, you should be at 35-40k yearly easy.
I used to do what you do and I made that in syracuse.. which is a lot cheaper to live in than NYC..

I used to get about $18/hr plus benefits in Tucson, AZ for doing the same work, and I was at the bottom of the pay scale.

See, what you do is you go look for another job. You to the whole thing. Send applications, go in interviews, and entertain offers. When you get an offer you might think of taking but you still want to stay doing what you're doing, you take that offer to your current boss and you show them.

They either pay you enough to get you to stay, or you take the better job.

    I took the better job.

:) I think it's more a personal opinion as to whether you stay or go. If your getting benefits, you can afford to live on the pay and if you like the company and area your working in, then it might be to your advantage to stick it out and see if wages go up. What good is a better paying job if you hate the area and company your working for? Lower wages could also mean more job security. Weigh it out before you jump the gun.

have to agree FlyNdragon, it's well worth weighing up the pros/cons of the job, ok if you hate it outright then its not the job or company for you, but if its on pay then you need to look at what benefits the company gives you, you may have a lower paid job but better benefits as in pension, health etc

I made a hard decision nearly 2yrs ago, and left a job/industry I was in for 15yrs to try something new, it took me 2mths of weighing up to decide, in th end the pay was slightly lower but would increase and the benefits were similar or better... so I left.. now I enjoy my none-stressful job, plus the perks and travel are a bonus :)

but do not take this decision lightly as mentioned adn don't leave acromoniously as you never know!
