Oprah is coming to Australia

    In the biggest news to hit Australia, and particularly the Australian Tourist Industry, since the announcement that the 2000 Olympic Games would be held in Australia, was the announcement that "Oprah is coming to Australia".

    She obviously has been thinking of the visit for a while.

    My note: December is not the best time to visit Australia. Lord help us if she flies north to Port Douglas (near where I live) and a cyclone (hurricane) hits. She will probably fly to Cairns as part of the tour, to visit the Great Barrier Reef, Port Douglas (where US Presidents have stayed) and many other attractions around here.

    The weather will be a complete contrast to Chicago. Australia will be in the middle of Summer heat, compared to winter in Chicago.

    Still the greatest coup for Australia in over 10 years.

    As expected, Oprah's coming visit was just about the lead item on all our night time News TV programs. Some places are already up in arms as it appears they are going to miss out. The Gold Coast and Townsville are 2, at least. :-D

    There is always rivalry between Cairns and Townsville. :)

    Well Bigbazza, I think N5638J means 'shoot on sight!' I don't think he likes Oprah!!:-D One things for sure, this trip will undoubtly cost a small fortune, but she can afford it;) While we're on the subject of "The Land Down Under," I'm curious about something and maybe you can clarify it for me. Hypothetically, say I wanted to move to Australia, is it true that I would only be able to stay six months and not receive citizenship status? Is it even possible to receive citizenship status if I immigrated to Australia? I've heard that ya'll have a 'closed border' when it comes to immigration, is that true? No, even though I'd love to move there, that kind of move is NOT in my future! So rest easy Bigbazza, Stubby is NOT coming to Australia, I'm sure you guys have enough problems!!roflmao

    Nope, not even close. Australia has very liberal immigration policies. Actually, I think just about half of S.E. Asia and Africa has moved here in recent years. Not to mention all the so-called "refugees".rolleyes If you're referring to the 'White Australia Policy', that went out in '73.
    ~ I've never been made an Aust. citizen as such, but apparently I've been here long enough to qualify, or something.
    If I went back to the U.S., where I went to college and such, I'd need a Green Card for anything more than a tourist stay, even though I was granted Citizenship, or so I've been told. So If anything, it's harder the other way around.

    As for Oprah - yeah the further away she is from me, the happier I am.;)

    Thanks Phantom! I've often wondered about that and now I need not wonder anymore;) However, I am not totally ignorant about 'The Land Down Under,' after all, I have eaten at the 'Outback Steakhouse' a couple of times!! And I have watched their commercials too!:-D Seriously though, I do appreciate you explaining that. As for Oprah, well I'm going to have to go along with the rest of the sentiments....not only is she annoying, but quite boring as well!!

    Wow, a straw poll of replies, to date, is 100% against Oprah.

    I like her. And her visiting OZ is probably the greatest thing ever to happen to the OZ Tourist industry.

    9/11, the tyranny of distance, and the Economic Crisis ( that the banks started ) and, now, our ever increasing OZ Dollar Exchange rate have hit our Tourist industry hard.

    Both my sons work in the Tourist industry, so I am well aware of its plight.

    I just hope she gets to Uluru, maybe Broome and Kakadu, as part of her visit.
    8 days is not enough, but certainly a start.

    Oprah, in her private ($30 million) ;) jet, is about to land in my home town. :-D
    10am Wednesday morning, Cairns (Queensland time)

    I won't be there to watch it land. ;)

    Customs will go onboard to clear her to visit OZ, and then she flies out to visit a tourist Island. No disembarking, to go through Customs, for her. :-D

    Yesterday, Thursday OZ time, Oprah visited Uluru (originally named Ayer's Rock, by white settlers) in the centre of Australia. Like flying from New York to Chicago (in the USA). A long way. ;)

    Oprah Winfrey is queen of our desert - and she loved Uluru

    I'm pleased that she recognised the good work done by Gina Elise with that nice bundle of goodies, but...
    The few snippets of footage showing her audience scared the carpe out of me. Pirhanas around a fresh corpse would be more restrained.

    The Oprah show will screen 4 "Oprah shows" about her tour of OZ, starting Tuesday night (in the USA) and next Wednesday night (in OZ)

    In Australia, they will screen On Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights on Channel 10. ;)

    As they say in the classics, check your local guides for screenings, around the world. :-D

    The first of 4 "Oprah shows" was screened last night to OZ audiences on Channel 10 TV. :)

    Apparently after the first screening in the USA, Tuesday night, donations to the OZ flood relief fund, amount donated leapt from $100 million+ to $120 million+

    Such is the power of her show. :cool
