    Which browser is best
i personally love firefox the most. and if anyone complains it doesent have a certain feature, you can probably get an extension for whatever you want

    Flock

    ;)

IE is IE, Firefox is, in my opinion, overrated. 80% of the extentions are useless or just eye-candy. I guess going by your poll choices, I'd choose Opera.

IE7 shouldnt be in the list as its still beta and subject to many changes before its full release in Quarter 4 of this year.

Another VOTE for Flock over Firefox as I love its simplistic approach, still nto seen the need to load up a browser with a myriad of extentions, Opera I love but they need to not add too mucg to it and go the extentions route, Opera is far quicker and more secure than FF.

IE7+ thats installed with Vista ( not installed with XP ) is at this stage pretty secure, in that the temporary internet folders have no permissions to allow anything to install as UAC ( User Account Control ) kicks in and in turn UAP stops any messages from any file in TIF, from being elevated in user privilages to run said file.

But in IE7+'s case I guess proof will be once its available to the masses and the malware writers goto town on it, but with only Windows Defender running on my test PC, it works well, no Malware infection as yet.

Voted for firefox but I too use flock, love the simple theme. Only extensions I use are adblock and flashblock which are both available for flock. Have used opera 9 a bit lately but don't find it any quicker on a decent spec computer.

I of course voted for firefox, though I do have IE7+ installed ( :) ).

The only extension I have running on FF, is the Nightly Tester Tools (NTT).

Voted for FF, but voted using Flock. :D

Flock's very fast, but still seems a lil buggy (it shut down on me the other day).

I got Opera 9 too. The preview on the tab's cool, but I find FF just a tad quicker.

Too scared to try IE7, though. :)

Voted for FF because I don't use IE anymore. I have been meaning to try
Opera, but have been content with FF so I haven't gotten around to it yet.

the reason i put ie7 in there is because you can download the beta of it and get a general feel for it

    and about flock

i only put the three most popular browsers in there.
and i didnt know flock existed untill you guys told me about it.

i think i will go try flock out

Think you'll like it. Besides, what's better than a faster FF? :)

I've tried IE7, and am really not a big fan. I voted firefox. I think the memory leak is a myth. I've put FF on well over 100 computers, and I've never noticed a problem. It does eat up alot of memory when it has alot of pages in cache, but that's easily corrected.

I've never tried Opera, becuase like Cochese, I'm content with FF. Heh, same with Flock, and K-melon and the other firefox engine browsers that other seem to like. I just can't be bothered.

i use ff 'cozy the geeks told me to! the only extension i have is abc spell. that took a bit effort to download and again i was helped by the geeks. ff is definitely quicker than !E 6. don't feel the need to experiment further. much aloha everyone. happy thursday.

FF 2.0 has spell checking built in. :)

On a side note: #107, I have used Opera in the past, from its first iteration, to the latest. I really don't like the overall feel to it. It is just not quite what I wanted.

flock was ok, but i really don't need that photo thing. (correct me if i'm wrong but)all of the features can be supported by firefox with an extension. and like other people here, i am too content with firefox to switch.

my favorite extension for firefox is google browser sync. i have a laptop and a desktop with firefox on both so now all of my bookmarks are synced every time i start up firefox on either computer. you have to download it from google's website, not from firefox's. the only problem i have with it is it doesnt sync extensions. there is however another extension that creates a backup of your extensions so you can transfer them via usb flash drive.
the extension playing online pong comes in a close 3rd

IMHO it is about what you want or need. Tabbed browsing, extensions, add-ons or simply surfing. At the end of the day, IE seems to be behind the times, but I find the Firefox interface ugly and the tabs feel clunky and Opera tries too hard to be all MAc looking. I use IE and Maxthon over the top. Until something works as cool as that, I am good. I think IE takes too much crap and the others get a tad too much credit in the security arena. ActiveX was the big security risk, but IE addressed auto downloads of that a very long time ago, yet people contine on about Firefox being so much safer. Simply not true. Want safety? Disconnet and you will be fine :)

I have multiple browsers installed only b/c I use them to check how web pages view after being designed, etc. I don't like Opera, FF is not only slow but IMO highly over-rated, I'm not real impressed with Flock and Avant which uses the IE shell is a resource hog and not as feature rich as my browser of choice for years...which also uses IE's shell, Maxthon. Maxthon does everything I want and more.:)

I voted FireFox - and I use it everytime I'm online. I have a single extension DownThemAll (-download manager) which maintains frequently dropped connections for me on my rural Canada antiquated 28.8 line. Opera looks cool but unfortunately it is now in the crosshairs of the "bad people". H.D.Moore who normally targets Internet Explorer for the "fine-tooth-comb" inspection has reported that Opera has a serious problem. Oh no!. This was reported on July 25, 2006, for the Opera 9.0 browser. The flaw, silently infects your computer just by viewing the hacked page. No clicking is necessary - simple re-direction to the hacked page and then a simple return and most of us woudn't even have a clue that we've been compromised. Now that's a scary story. FrSIRT (the French Security Incident Response Team) has declared this risk as "critical". Here's their link:

i use firefox the most, complete with extensions and themes. i like flock, but i can't seem to keep using it. i do like how it controls the blocking for flash files. i don't like opera. i'm sure its a good browser, but i don't like the way it feels. IE 7 has alot of catching up to do, imo.

I totally agree that what one needs to browse, is up to ones own opinion.

I do NOT push FireFox on anyone.

But, I personally enjoy the "ugliness" of Firefox. Very simple and plain. Just like when I ran XP I ran with no themes.

In the end, it all matters on what one wants.

Most are saying that flaw, which is fixed in weekly build 8552, seems to just crash the browser over allowing malware in, even HDM said the same and he was the one who reported it... a quote from him
quote taken from link in your link above.

Opera still have a superb record of minimal exploits and fixing any quickly... however as you say prometheos, they will start being picked up in the crosshairs.. like Mozilla is now, but still not as bad as IE.

But still alot of these reported exploits come to nothing and are just theoretical, possible, may happen issues.... whatever browser used, a large chunk of your safety in being in the net is down to how you surf, what you click on, what and where you download stuff from... (I still notice in HJT logs of people infected with malware, the p2p app installed... doesnt bother me in the slighest what you get from p2p be that legal or illegal.. but you have to accept the concequence of using this medium that what your downloading may not be what your expecting ) and what security measures you put in place.

IE7 for XP, will still I fear be hit with many exploits, not as many as IE6, but in Vista its a different beast, for the reasons I mention here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=821018&postcount=3

but again time will tell as someone will find away around UAC or because some new users to Vista may have read the past issues with it poping up all over the place, decide to disable it because they read ( Old story ) or were told by friend to do so  when on release UAC maybe less evident in its popups and its evolving as we speak in each new build.

I use Firefox, i love it and i cannot live without the extensions, they make life so much easier.

here is a few examples of what some of my installed extensions do for me.

Down them all i use this a hell of a lot, i am a huge archiver of web news and images posted on certain news sites wuith down them all, i can find a page with lets say 56 images, lets sayn they are pictures of flowers or animals and you want them all, well with 2 clicks i can have every single image downloaded and inside a chosen folder very very quickly..No need for right clicks on each image :)
Now lets imagine you are on a page that has embedded links and you wish to save all the web pages that these links are, well down them all will save every single web page for you in 2 clicks. :)

Session saver, this will save the tabbed windows i have open so next time i reboot these windows will auto load..yes it does more but thats the basic idea.

Password maker This is a Mozilla plug-in to help you get secure passwords. It takes a master password and the URL of the site that requires a password and combines them using an MD5 hash to generate a site specific password.

Gmail manager I love this, i have 3 gmail accounts for different purposes, with this tool i can check each account on the fly aswell as being notified when i have a new message aswell as open the window for me.

MozImage Convert text URLs and links to images into thumbnails of the said image. Man i love this extension.

Plain text links I love this one also..With any text that can be treated as a URL, using this extension you can select the text, right click, and select "Open this URL in a new tab" or "Open this URL".

I come across many times were links are not clickable, i highlight the link right click and hey presto it searches the link in google for me, it will also do the same with any text you highlight.

Video Downloader Does what it says and does it real well. Any youtube or google video can be downlaoded direct to your pc. :)

I will leave it here..I do use more extensions as there is so many cool ones to use. I understand everyone has their own choices for web browsers as has been shown in this thread.

take care everyone i hope you are all well.

    P.S sorry for any typos.

I recently read an interview with Blake Ross, one of the creators of Firefox, and I thought he had a really interesting thought on the whole browser war thing:

I think he couldn't be more dead on, and I agree completely. Ultimately, the 'best' browser is the one that most closely suits your needs. That's why multiple browsers exist. If there really were an easily discernable best, the market would get wise pretty quick and everyone would use just that one browser. The whole shebang is about opptions, not superiority. I would argue, in fact, that for security reasons, diversity of browsers on the web is one of the best things out there. It's a lot harder (I think) to write malware that will work equally well on IE, Firefox, Opera, Maxathon, Off By One (anyone ever used this kooky thing?), Safari, Flock, and Netscape, and Mozilla. If malware authors only had to write for a single browsers flaws, I expect the internet would be a more dangerous place.

For me personally, the perfect browser is firefox. To me, the whole customizability and open source thing is so important. For instance, I have wanted mailto links to go to a webmail account (once yahoo, now gmail) for years. For firefox, I can simply install the WebMailCompose extention. I've also wanted to selectively enable javascript on a site by site basis forever. Firefox gives me the No Script extention which allows me to do this.

What's amazing about open source (though, I'll be the first to acknowledge problems in the opensource community) is that it harnesses the maximum power available. The same way a distributed computing project takes advantage of thousands of ready, willing, and able processors, open source takes advantage of all available programmers. It a general trend of distributing, decentralizing, democratizing responsibility that, in my humble opinion, is the web 2.0 way of the future. This distributed responsibility is what caused the internet to grow into the largest knowledge data base in human history. It is what caused wikipedia to become one of the most content filled sites on the net in just a couple of years. And it is what allows security flaws in FF to be patched in a matter of hours.

While IE may have a developement team numbering X highly skilled professionals, FF has one numbering infinity. And that, my friends, I think it pretty cool.

I don't find the FF interface ugly at all. I use the iFox 2.3 theme because I like the colors and like theefool said, plain and simple.

One thing I really like about FF is the tab feature. I don't have to open a new window to look at a different site. I don't know about the others, but I never noticed it on IE.

Nice post MKorostoff and I agree with both you and Ross, sums up the area of browser "wars" completly... plus competition is good.
