OPTIMIZATION with NORTON SPEED DISK

To pick up from a prior thread....

It appears that Norton et al have discontinued Speed Disk, which was a very good Defragmentation and Optimizer tool. Infoseeker and others wondered about where to get it- it appears that you would need a copy of Systemworks 2003 or earlier, as it was included in that suite of applications (that's how I acquired it, although I quit using NAV two years ago and switched to AVG).

An Optimizer moves frequentlly used files to locations near the start of the disk for quicker access by the pickup head. The beauty of NSD is that it allows you to specify particular files of your choosing to be included or ignored for the optimization. I place my simple data and archived files near the end, and move the frequently accessed files/folders such as games near the start. There is no actual advantage to placing the OS folders at the start, since once the OS is started and running there is fairly little disk accessing of the OS files compared to your installed applications. An exception would be the page file, of course, but far better to move the page file to another disk altogether, so that it has a "dedicated", so to speak, pickup head that doesn't need to fly back and forth across the disk surface to handle other requests from the OS and your running applications.

And for obvious reasons, I cannot offer to upload you a copy of NSD to try on your machine. Sorry. Perhaps a little "garage saling" across the web would be the best option. Be Seeing You........

Yea....but there are plenty of other defragmenters out there that work just as well and besides, I never really liked Norton, I've had bad experiences with the Anti-Virus and Firewall plus its bloatware, so for people who wanna take performance into consideration, stay away from Norton lol

    Just my 2 cents..

Yes, that is why I quit using NAV. However, NSD is a separate application that can be installed independently, and it is the optimization function that is useful. That is the issue I was addressing, which we were originally discussing in another thread (Boosting performance ) from yesterday. I know it isn't obvious from what I wrote-I was picking up where we left off there.

Well, SpeedDisk can't be installed just by itself, from a Norton System Works CD, can it? I have NSW 2002, which I used with Win 98SE, and I did use SpeedDisk. I did not install NSW with Win XP, although I did install NAV from it.

I guess you're saying that SpeedDisk can be installed without installing the full NSW suite of utilities. Is that right?

Don't agree with you. I've yet to find a (free) defragger that works as well as Speedisk. I recently purchased 2006 SystemWorks 2006 premier edition. Although I have yet to install it, I am pretty sure that you do not need to install the AntiVirus facility. I use Avast for AV, with no intention of changing. I have had various versions of Norton SystemWorks since Windows 95 and like some of the facilities offered, but not all.

WinDoctor, for example, has saved me on many occasions in the past. Bazza
