hello again! ...more problems... how could it be otherwise?

the history: been off-line for about a month. the ISP came yesterday and finally gaev me an internet connection for my new home. connected the PC this afternoon, and of course, loads of updates were waiting!
I started with the obvious: windows updates. ashamed to say I'm not sure what got installed, though
I noted that my nod32 trial had expired, but decided to take care of that later (now have antivir).

installed, went to bed, came back after clueless husband used PC, but he swears it was just newspaper and the bank websites... and yet surprise! out of nowhere, 3 times in a row already, I get a blue screen, telling me that there was an error, that I should check run a hardware test, and a memory test, and, in any case restart...

when I restart, I get a bootscreen with the IBM logo and the title OS/2 WARP; with an H, instead of the registered R.

tried running antivir, but PC restarts, tried running spybot, same thing. don't know what test to run either. suggestions? does this situation sound familiar?

    system:
    A64 3022+ Venice
    2.4 GHZ
    1Gb RAM
    MSI K8NGM2

These do not sound like malware problems.

What OS are you running? You said you got Windows Updates but then you are mentioning OS/2 Warp?

I'm running windows xp sp2. the warp bootscreen appeared for the first time when I rebooted after bsod, prior to which, the only major download was whatever windows update found. I thought it may have found that the os was somewhat... ahem... tricked... don't know where I got warp from. just a home computer here!

I think I may have solved it by putting all bios settings to default optimized. ram and proc were slightly overclocked (as per recommendations for my mobo on anandtech forums), and although my system had been perfectly stable until now (did a lot of testing back in the time, and never had any trouble before), maybe some of the updated software didn't like the bios settings.

for the record, antivir found a trojan and bitdefender 3 infected files, but I think you're right, and this has nothing to do with malware.

thanks for the reply!:) let me know if you think there is something I may be misreading here, but I'll be sure to post back if I run into more problems

PS. funny you would choose that line for your sig ;)

sorry for the double post... can't see the edit button:confused:

is it possible for warp to have just appeared out of the blue? also, is it normal for the name to be OS/2 (h) warp, and not OS/2 (r) warp?

No it is not normal for OS/2 to appear at all on a Windows based system. If you are running an illegal copy of Windows, who know what you will get. At anyrate, this is not a malware problem. If you want to pursue possible hardware or software related issues, your can try posting in the Hardware or Software Forums.
