I sure hate to play dummie here; BUT, here goes.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/deta...ce_boost).html

When going to the page for the above link the "download" buttons are kind of confusing. The one towards the bottom (Recommended Editors Pick) leads me to believe that particular download button is for malware. Yet the description to the left emphasizes Tweaking.com ????

Then there are the two (MG) download buttons at the very top ????

Hate to ask - BUT - please advise.

    Thanks,

    Dekade

Yeah, the MG download links can be a bit confusing sometimes, but wherever possible use either one of the MG download links or the author's site. I don't see the editor's pick, maybe because my ad blocker suppresses it. I doubt it's anything to do with Simple System Tweaker.

Just for the heck of it, I attached a screen shot of what I was talking about with the "editors pick".

Definitely an ad, though can't tell what for. Use an ad blocker. That page looks completely different in Firefox with AdBlock Plus. I guess you are using IE.

I use Firefox also. Your reply pretty much convinces me that I need an ad blocker. I definitely been getting sick of ads lately. Is AdBlock Plus one of the better choices? Is it free? Any other suggested free ones?

AdBlock Plus is free and has been very effective for me so not really looked at alternatives.

I use adblock plus, but, I don't on websites I support. If this site were to offer a pay to block ads, I would. But they don't, so I disable ABP on this site.

I see. I understand what you are saying. Sounds like the smart way to use ad blocker software. I have been looking at ADBlock Plus. Probably will go that route. Any suggestions for malware software?

Jokes aside, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is probably the most recommended and used program of it's kind. The free version doesn't include real-time protection and auto updates.

    Hi

SSDs will give a PC running win 7 or 8 + a performance hit as they are geared towards these devices, especially win8, ram and at least 4GB is a good performance gain.

Others like I mentioned earlier in startups are small hits but good ones as many apps add themselves to startup and they are not needed, the SERVICES list well from Win7 they have not really needed to be tweaked as the OS manages then ok itself.

AS for security then its what you download so using what is considered good antivirus or malware is null, but I would rad this HERE for advice on security.

    Thanks David GP,

The jury is still out on which way I am heading. However, to bridge the time span between building a new system I definitely think I am going to go with an SSD Sata III drive even though I have a Sata II motherboard. I am also turning towards NOT messing around with Services in WIN 7 Pro like you and Adrynyline have advised. Eldon wants me to run WinPatrol and then get back with him on screen shots for Services and startup. I'm okay on startups; always have been; have worked in MSCONFIG for years regarding startups. But, like I said, I don't really want to mess with Services.

    That's again for more input.

Dekade, I merely suggested WinPatrol because it's like one stop shopping. You don't have to use it to change anything, which I did not suggest. But you can see everything from one program. Instead of running System Configuration (msconfig), Services, and Task Scheduler, WinPatrol will show startup items, services, and tasks.

Personally, I don't like optimising and/or tweaking programs. I use the included utilities in Windows to change Windows. And I manually edit the registry. You said: "I'm actually pretty pleased with my rig. It is pretty dog gone fast." Again, compare your PC specs with mine. I have a 10 year old 80 GB IDE HDD. I have Windows XP & 7, MSO 2003 & 2007, and more than 40 programs. Why don't I have a slow startup? Or delayed typing?

FYI Last year I installed Bluestacks and it was a wake-up call. It installed 3 services, 2 were set to automatically start. When I connected to the internet, Bluestacks, unbeknown to me, started downloading. At almost 190 MB, I pulled the modem. I changed the startup type to disabled, but Bluestacks stil started when I double-clicked the desktop shortcut!

Will you be happy with a program(s) that starts and downloads without your knowledge? :confused How are you going to know if you don't at least look at Services? :confused

There are knowledgable members on this thread. They can advise you which services can be set to manual ie, they will start when needed.

    Eldon,

Please accept an apology from me. In no way did I mean to argue what you were saying. At the time I wrote the post containing comments about you and WinPatrol I fully intended (and still do intend) to run WinPatrol. I am curious also to see what it returns. I was only commenting that I didn't really want to mess with services 'based' on comments by Adrynyline and others. HOWEVER, that does not deter the fact that there may be one lonely services that could use tweaking that could ultimately not hinder anything, but, alternately could solve and take care of a lot.

Sorry Eldon. I still remain very much on page with your suggestion on WinPatrol. I only wish, per hindsight, that I would have worded things differently. In fact before I get involved in anything else I think I'll run it right now. I will post screen shots shorthly.

Kindest of regards to your help and direction -

You're welcome. I will not give any advice that I don't have firsthand experience of. Adrynyline is a knowledgable member of MajorGeeks. His advice is always professional. Don't mess with services unless you know what you're doing.

I just ran WinPatrol. I have not gone into extensive study on the results. I guess it appears as though I would need "Plus" to fully understand any entry. Is that correct? I would imagine that studying, using Plus, would help me determine the value of running or not running an entry - Correct? Therefore, do I need the Plus version? Or - can things be determined without it by studying my screen shots?

That being said - I do see a few things in Services that I do not need to have running (like 602Updater for example which is for a PDF printer software).

Does anyone else see anything in the screen shots that jumps out at you as unnecessary to the smooth operation of my Win7 Professional OS with 8GB ram? In previous posts on this thread I discussed the hesitation of the cursor in entering characters after they had been hit on the keyboard while in WORD 2002, Firefox when typing search entries, Outlook when typing emails, etc. All instances occupy maybe 3% of my typing time. Those concerns are basically how this whole WinPatrol conversation started.

    Thanks forum.

You have 15 services running of which all but 1 is set to startup automatically. And you have 2 services that have stopped but, are set to start automatically. I have 6 and 5 of them I can set to start manually. But, I don't have a slow startup. I am not familiar with all those programs but, some like Adobe Acrobat Update Service, Ask Update Service, Nero Update & TeamViewer can be set to manual startup. Hopefully other members can advise you.

If you can't wait, change 1 service at a time and monitor whether everything is running as it should. Leave avast! and the NovaStor services alone.

If or when you buy an SSD, and do a fresh install, carefully monitor the startup time and MSO Word after every installation of a program.

Am I asking too much if I post choices that I am considering changing in an effort to obtain further advice? Yes, you are correct, I - "DO" want to be careful here. Can't afford a shut down at this point in time.

Important question: Do I need WinPatrol plus to read about the entries to find out their origin, etc.?

Did you see any that you wish to tell me to "ABSOLUTELY LEAVE ALONE" ?

I cannot tell you which programs and/or Internet services to use. Only you can decide what you want or need. That said, have a look at what My Digital Life has to say about Protexis Licensing Service. This seems like bad news.

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/how-t...ll-protexis-licensing-service-psiservice-exe/

If you are not familiar with the services, do some research.

TeamViewer - Can be set to Manual ie, it will start when needed.
Dragon Service - If this is Dragon Naturally Speaking, it can be set to Manual.
602Updater - Do you need this?
Adobe Acrobat Update Service, Ask Update Service, Nero Update can be set to Manual.
PDFPrint - Why does it start with Windows? I use PDFCreator and it starts when needed.

Do not disable any service. Take one at a time and set the Startup Type to manual. And leave the Windows and Backup Services alone!

As for WinPatrol, I cannot advise you to buy the Plus edition because I wont. I don't really see what the Plus edition offers. I don't need a program to stop crapware from installing.

In retrospect, you are using Microsoft Office 2002. Why, when 90% of your work is word processing? Have a look at the following articles.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office_XP

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/win...OrVersion=10&Type=Software&tempOsid=Windows+7

Previously I suggested MSO 2010 Home & Student because it only includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. But, if you use MSO commercially, you need the Business Edition. I also suggested WPS Office (previously Kingsoft Office) but, it seems the free version is limited.

Start a new thread and ask about WPS Office. Or, try one of the free Word Processors listed on MajorGeeks.

    Hi

In your 1st screenshot Startups the only think I would have starting in that list is Avast, remove the rest.

IE Helpers -- If you use Skype then leave those alone, if you dont use Skype alot then remove from IE helpers as Skype will run ok without needing a link in IE, plus it looks as if you use Firefox anyways.

    Thank you JoeRay12. :cool

That's good advice. I will not let any program start with Windows, install a Service, or a Task without my permission. If I can't delete it, I will find it in the Registry... and then kill it.

    Thanks DavidGP. I agree.

Please stay onboard. Dekade's slow startup and delayed typing will not be solved with an SSD. Not if you look at my PC specs (compared to his), and take into account I don't have a slow Startup.

You mean I need to read the whole thread in full, thought we were spitballing ideas on optimisation but I agree an SSD wont fix something inherent to the current install if you transfer the OS+soft across to an SSD, a clean install likely will but that can be overkill.

Will re-read all again now to catch up, but my quick ask of Dekade is if you boot into Safe Mode with Networking how do things run, I know the resolution will be naff but just think of the startup and delayed typing, has being in Safe Mode helped?

Also Whats the full spec of your PC, make model if OEM like HP, DELL etc or motherboard make and model if custom build and is Win7pro fully up to date at SP1 with current updates?

Any yellow ! marks in device manager and if so what?

Plus just to get an idea of your installed software can you follow the below:

You have provided some great information. I have both Corel Paint Shop Pro X6 and Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X7. I will definitely study this link and situation right away. I scanned thought the link somewhat and it looks like a definite issue. Thanks a bunch for the research.

Team Viewer - Yes, I see that and will do - I may delete the program entirely
Dragon - Yes, I see that and will do
602Updater - Planned on deleting that program a long time ago
Adobe, etc. - Yes, I see that and will do
    PDFPrint - Oversight, will correct

I will follow the one at a time advice.

    JoeRay12:
    Appreciated tip
Honestly speaking, I didn't realize they were there. Will address them.
Are you saying to delete all Java Runtime on my system - both as program and registry entries? Then reinstall it and make certain that It is not running as an updater in services?
Yes, I must have done those in the past and have since learned to just go to the mfgr's website for any driver update checking. My plan now is to just delete the programs.

General question: Just out of curiosity when all of you folks delete a program do you then go to the registry (Win 7 Pro) and perform a Find/Find Next to make certain that the program is completely gone? That's what I have been practicing. Don't know if it's right or wrong to do so.

Looks like I am getting to the point where I am going to have to set aside a day and get at this problem solving. I don't want to lose the interest state that is currently generated. I'm thinking about starting in tomorrow (02/04/2015); slight chance for the next day though.

    DavidGP,

Okay, here we go. Attached is the text file of all programs installed. Also attached is a PDF of my computer specs.

I - HAVE NOT - tried Safe Mode or Safe Mode and Networking (since the time of your asking if I have). Reason is this - The delayed typing is sporadic. Sometimes won't occur for an hour; then constantly for maybe 20 minutes; then repeats the cycle. Safe mode takes so long anyway to start that I wonder as to its practicality of providing a sensible comparison. I am very open to being corrected on these remarks.

There are not any yellow ! marks in Device Manager.

I am now going to investigate the Protexis Licensing Service. When I glanced at it earlier there appears to be a work around that will keep the programs working rather than locking them up. Will see. Not certain what I'll do if the Corel programs lock up. I think the article mentioned earlier versions than the ones I have for the issue. Will study and see what to do.

    UPDATE:

    OK, here's where I'm at:

    1) Studied 3rd party uninstallers. Went with IOBIT Uninstaller 4.2 due to having 64 bit compatibility. Didn't want to pay for Revo to have 64 bit. Did not like reviews of Comodo. IOBIT has a great feature which clears the registry of leftover files and entries as the very last step of uninstalling a program.
    2) Uninstalled - Driver Sweeper, Driver Scanner, GoToMeeting, Corel Paint Shop Pro x3 and x5, Microsoft Streets and Trips, Search app by ASK, and Software602 Print2PDF (strangely though - Print2PDF still remains in 'startups'); Corel Paint Shop Pro x6 and Corel VideoStudio Ultimate x7 still remain on the system - as does also - Corel Word Perfect Suite 11.(Even though I use MSO 2002 WORD all the time I keep CWP11 for old files from years back.) [I am currently studying all of the free word processor suites in an effort to pick one - maybe.]
    3) After uninstalls WinPatrol would not start. Uninstalled WinPatrol and then did a full new reinstall. Now okay. Don't know why that happened.
    4) Started in on Protexis License Issue. I found the following link to be the most thorough for instructions. HOWEVER, I am still unclear on whether to start at the very top of the document or the last option at the bottom for 'V2' services. I can't understand if the steps 'above' the last step for V2 services are required or not. Disabled both 'V2' services in Services - but that's as far as I've gotten. I would like to request some assistance on this matter.
    http://www.techbuzz.in/workaround-to-remove-protexis-licensing-service-from-your-pc.php

I have tried to uncheck PDF24 Creator in 'startups'. Nontheless, every time I try to use it as the printer in a program it will not start. Once I check it to start upon startup then I have no problem.

At this point in time there is no change in startup time.

    Thanks for your time,

No this is good information in that delayed typing is sporadic, which is leading me to suspect your logitech wireless keyboard/mouse for delayed typing and to see if this is the case do you have any wired keyboard/mouse around you could test with?

Also uninstall and re-install the latest Logitech MK700/710 software/drivers and see if that helps.

Safe Mode basically starts you PC with no or minimal 3rd party software, so it helps rule out issues with 3rd party software against a barebones Windows install, you could try a clean boot which is slightly different to Safe Mode and see how your PC boots and runs.

    That is good news thanks.

Have you used msconfig to untick any startups at all? if so then its likely that this startup is stuck, one reason never to use msconfig to manage startups, enter msconfig and check and re-tick all startups listed, then try and deleted Print2PDF with CCleaner and its Tools > Startups

These are still listed in add/remove? if they are I would try Revo and the 32bit version is fine, just run as admin the app.

If that doesnt work then its possible the uninstaller for these apps are not friendly with Win7, so manually delete their folders in Program files, they run CCleaner and the Tools > Uininstall list and click uninstall on them and if you get an error, it should allow you to delete the entry, then run the Registry cleaner in CCLeaner and run it a few times until nothing lists.

Try one of the below as they don't add startups.

Or another one I use is doPDF minimal resources used.

    Hi, Dekade.

    What CPU do you have?

Is it only in Word that you get the delayed typing?

Open Task Manager's Processes tab > View > Select columns and check Page faults. Watch this column with Word highlighted as you work, how fast are the Page faults climbing? Some screenshots would help. You can also use Resource Monitor (click to start it on TaskMan's Performance tab) to track this.

What I'm getting to is that Word doesn't just use RAM, it's hard coded to use the page file; the fewer CPU cores you have and the slower the drive on which the page file resides, the more likely you will be to see this delayed typing.

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/clinth/archive/2009/07/16/the-case-of-the-phantom-hard-page-faults.aspx

So, if your security/backup software is also working hard, it will also increase the 'lag', as it will be using the same page file and increasing the queue length.

As Windows puts the application asking for the data into a wait state until it's loaded while it frees up some space, writes out the data and then loads it, this can cause repeated pauses.

I would like to say this: I have updated the drivers; BUT, I 'have' to say this (to more benefit the forum despite my pride): I could have sworn that I had Logitech "SetPoint" software/drivers installed. I checked my downloads folder and noted that I had downloaded the items three times but evidently never did install them. Thus, I returned to Logitech's website and downloaded/installed the very latest 64 bit versions. Now I will wait and see on the delayed typing before I do anything else regarding the delayed typing.
You misunderstood me. Yes, they are supposed to still be in there. I want these two programs on my computer.
I just completed your suggested process of removal via CCleaner. The "Print2PDF" did delete.
HOWEVER - IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING
Please look at the attached 'startupContext.txt' file. (I have attached all five files from CCleaner). Do you see the 'Print602' ? I did an internet search on 'Print602' because I was pretty certain that it was part of Print2PDF. I was correct - AND - surprised at the following search return. Please look at this link: http://www.pc-face.com/dll-file-error/print602.dll-fix-130461/
Note that slow startup and opening of programs is mentioned.
Now ... can it be assumed that the 'Print602' listed in the 'startupContext.txt' file is one in the same with the Print602.dll? IF SO - would we conclude that I should get it off of my computer?
However, are the instructions that are laid out in the link - SAFE TO PERFORM???
Finally - per the attached CCleaner .txt files should I be deleting anything in those CCleaner tabs?
I have not yet performed a Safe Mode cold boot. Will do so in due time.

Yes, I did look at the link when you first gave it to me. Interestingly enough the fourth paragragh has a link to the Protexis website. Clicking on it leads one to believe that the 'Protexis.com' website evidently does not even exist anymore.

Nonetheless, note these instructions in the link - because I DO HAVE version2.

Note step 4. On my computer I have a 'PSIKey-31001.dll' file - AND - a 'PSIKey-32001.dll' file - AND - a 'PsiService_2.exe'. Would I use the PSIKey-31001.dll file - OR - PSIKey-32001.dll file -OR- the 'PsiService_2.exe' file -OR- all three of them ? AND, would I need to copy them into EVERY Corel program files folder (for every 'different' Corel program) that I have on my computer?

Unfortunately I cannot vouch for the instructions to remove Protexis. I suggest you start a new thread - someone else may have had more experience with Protexis.

The link you posted re Print602.dll suggests it's bad news - get rid of it. doPDF as suggested by DavidGP is a great and straightforward PDF Printer Driver - it doesn't even require Ghostscript. If you need to protect and/or sign PDF documents, give PDFCreator a try. I have been using it since 2006 without any issues. There's no startup entry or background service running.

BTW How long did your PC take to start prior to following any of the advice given?

It 'did take' AND 'still does' take 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

I have removed the Print602 (via CCleaner), installed Logitech keyboard/mouse drivers, started in Safe Mode with Networking, and disabled lots of startup stuff. I have not messed around in services.

Yesterday I still had an issue "outside of MSO WORD, but within the Firefox search bar" of delayed typing.

I'm not sure of where we are at in all of this trouble shooting. I'm still questioning the integration of an SSD into the system and start with a fesh install of WIN7Pro. Then again, maybe I am just imagining all of this as being a problem. I'm kinda stumped right now. HOWEVER, it sure seems like 2 minutes and 20 seconds is very long for a start up; be it a cold boot or restart - makes no difference. I have yet to try a 'clean boot' as suggested by DavidGP. I'll try that today.

I did not want to suggest this. But, maybe you need a fresh re-install. If you go this route, check wat happens after the installation of every program. Check the Startup entries, Services, and Tasks.

Yep, I know what you mean. I have been trying to avoid that thought also. If I do a fresh install I will more than likely do it on a new SSD.
