:coolYes, I just heard it. President Obama addressed the country with a speech and heard it just now on our Canadian TV channel. :)

It's a Canadian story as well since 24 Canadians were killed on 9/11.

I think it's a world story. Granted 9/11 was the most well known thing he did, but he was a horrific monster to people the world over, and symbolic or not, his death was both well deserved and should help families the world over attain some peace.

Their loved ones are never coming back, but at least they are avenged.

It took them long enough and apparently all the funds paid to the Pakistani Government gave us little help as he was killed "near the Paki capital."

I heard about this on the P.A. radio in the shopping mall I was at this afternoon. I was one of the people that have lost relatives in the attack, so definitely no love loss here. In fact, I may be dusting off the Champagne tonight:wine Won't bring them back, but is some form of vindication.

As I suspected, he was living in luxury, shielded by his buddies in Pakistan, not hanging out in the caves of Afghanistan.

    Good riddance, i.m.o.

May Day will now have a new, additional meaning.

To me, it is truly sad and disheartening when we feel the need to rejoice about
the death and killing of another human being. But in a world where we still have
such cruelty and violence, it's probably unavoidable.

    War and terrorism are terrible.

Even when you win, you have still lost a lot.

How Embarrassed should Pakistan feel now !!! always denied he was in there country - yet was living right beside their countries secret forces barracks!!!
Our Country is now on high alert as we are expecting an imminent response from supporters here, as it is well known that we are a hot bed of islamic extremism. It goes to show that there is no hiding place for scum like this, and i for one is very pleased that he was killed, Hundreds of our boys have been murdered and maimed because of this man and his following.

    THANK YOU USA

My understanding is that they recovered the body and it has already been buried at sea so as not be become a shrine to the terrorist world and to prevent possible retaliation to the corpse. But they did extract material for DNA verification, and I'm positive photos exist that I'm sure will eventually be leaked, and I'm sure are horrible.

I'm glad he's gone. I wish his followers would all commit mass suicide in his honor and we could all be done with it.

I personally can't help but have a small amount of doubt thats it's actually him, if it is then 1 more nutcase is gone, how many thousand to go?

Feeling that Obama is taking a bit too much credit for himself personally after watching his broadcasts. Too many "I did this and I did that"

But.... to the troops on the ground and the men and women directing the assault and to the families of these soldiers I am personally thankful for ridding the world of one of the most cowardly and pathetic, yet terrifying leaders of all time.

I'm assuming Obama will heavily use this to get a 2nd term which I do not believe is deserved, I mean you can see how it went down.

Mr Soldier..."Mr President , we think we found him"
    Obama...."Oh good, go get him"
Mr Soldier.... "We got him sir, he's dead, we have his body"
    Obama... "Yay! I did it"

No offense to any Americans at all, your president is not a good one, but your boys on the ground are some of the best in the business and I applaud any and all who served in the effort to bring this monster to ground.

The question is..... what happens now? Do we keep pouring money into an endless war?
When it's all said and done there will be no winners.... just small victories.

Or will this be a big enough morale dent to subdue the bad guys, we can only hope.

It's a sad fact that someone else will take his place. They may be worse than him, we do not know. Therefore we must not shrink from continuing to fight the extremist groups that would cause so much harm.

  19. Nedlamar

    Nedlamar MajorGeek

I don't think we should keep fighting, well to some degree but not the amount of armed forces we have been pouring into this effort, it's a war that cannot be won, it's pointless.
Did anyone ever think that maybe, just maybe if all alied troops were pulled from the middle east that they would leave us alone as well?
Maybe thats narrow minded but how long can the US, Canada, UK and others keep this up?
I've been reading about the British military shrinking because of lack of funds, we've been intesnly fighting this war for a decade (longer if you count the years before 9/11) and to what end? the world is in a econimic tailspin, if we keep going how long will it be before something really gives out?
Should we fight this war for the next 10 years?... Or the next 20?.... or who knows, these guys aren't likely to stop so it will litterally keep going until there is either no more money for armed forces or they are all dead....... I'm pretty sure I know which one will come first.
On the other hand, if let be how much damage and how many lives will they take?

what concerns me is the extreme lack of home defense any of us have now, what happens if some other nut raises an army the likes of which we have not seen since 1945 and marches across europe or south America heading north?
I remember playing a game called World In Conflict, it basically played out a full scale russian invasion of the USA. Early in the game as the Russians landed and took control of major US coastal cities a General said "Where the hell are our ground defense troops?"
To which the reply was "they are fighting overseas in the middle east"

I say pull out and defend our own lands so we can get back on our feet.

Nedlamar, that is how it would go regardless of which President was in office. Trust me, had this happened when George Bush was still in office, his speech would have been full of "I" as well. Quite probably even moreso.

Oh I know, but we all knew Bush was like that, Obama was supposed to be a man for the people and a good guy etc, but..... well, you know the rest.

I just heard that it was an alleged Navy Seal incursion, which I find funny because I bloody said 10 years ago they should do it with spec ops instead of full force.
Cost much much MUCH less not only in finance but lives and damage.

But all said and done, like I said, hats off to the boys that really made it happen.

I don't agree Ned. The "I's" he uses seem to relate to him taking resposibility for the orders which is correct procedure. He gave credit where it was due. Had the mission been a disaster maybe some of the I's may have become We or They.

Because the President is the Commander in Chief, his/her analysis, evaluations and directives
are critical in determining the actions of the United States military and the posture
of the United States military around the globe.

The following was transcribed from the President's announcement.
These are the passages where he used I or referred to his actions and directives.

    Also from President Obama's announcement:

These are all proper and necessary actions to be taken by the President of the United States.

  26. Wenchie

That's exactly true. That's his job, whether or not people agree with the decisions he has to make we elected him to make those decisions. Even if you did not vote for the president your country did elect him and everyone should at least have respect for the office if not the man. That's just my humble opinion.

I couldn't do his job, I doubt many could and do it well, and I'm grateful that he takes all the flack and makes all those decisions so that I can continue to have the right to sit on my *** and bitch about how he could be doing it better.

His job is to provide the necessary political cover for any fallout that might occur. So far he's doing it. Good for him.

As for Bin Laden, it's a fitting end. Credit where it's due, he went down fighting, unlike Saddam.

The buck stops with the President, but compare this to the day that Saddam was pulled from his spider hole in 2003. Paul Bremer made the announcement - I'm guessing that GWB could have pulled rank, but chose not to. This article in Slate almost credits Obama with pulling the trigger personally. And carefully avoids mentioning his opposition to Bush's policies - the policies he later continued.

The only credit that was not given, was to the former Administration. This may not be entirely true, but early reports are indicating that SOME of the intel.. that led to the capture of one of Bin Laden's most trusted courier's brother, which led to knowledge about the compound came over 4 yrs. ago, in which the courier's brother was "tortured"/ waterboarded....etc.etc.

Obama is definitely the most kick @$$ Nobel peace laureate EVER,its like since he got the prize he's been on a mission,All the other peace laureates should be ashamed, when was the last time the Dalai Lama took out out a terrorist leader with special forces night raid or took out multiple combatants with a surgical JDAM strike to their command centre:confused

If the previous administration knew where he was located 4 years ago and did nothing, they would deserve no credit. It can't be true. I don't believe they would have let him go if they knew his location. If Bush had known Bin Laden's whereabouts, this would have been old news.

Well Bush's plan was to "Smoke him out." which obviously worked,Bush smoked him out of the country into Pakistan which is why he never found him in Afghanistan :-D

I think it was pretty obvious he'd was hiding somewhere Pakistan but its only recently Pakistan has allowed large numbers of foreign troops to operate within it borders.Pakistan is playing a dangerous game, they are balancing the feeling of the country/people that the west is evil with a genuine desire to disable international terrorism.

I think it was decided in Pakistan's best interest for it to be seen as a US operation with the responsibility lying on Obama's shoulders, it's much easier for the Pakistani people to accept. The last the thing we want is another middle east Facebook revolution but with nuclear weapons involved this time.

ASUS, if you do a little research you'll find that Muslims are supposed to be laid to rest within 24 hours of death, the US did not think they could find a country willing to let them bury his body there, and hanging is illegal in NY. Also, video is a LOT easier to fake than still photos...have you never seen a movie?

Yes, the DNA results came out quite quickly. Seems that they had/took Bin Laden's sister DNA while she was in Boston and had cancer. So they could compare it with hers. It was explained that this way is the fastest otherwise it would take some time.

I am still suspicious of this burial at sea so quickly after the siege of his compound.
I realize the Muslim faith requires burial within 24 hours but i doubt that is what was on the minds of those who gave the order put the body in the sea.???

Its conspiracy nirvana isn't it? Osama's dead,DNA testing proves it was him,the body is now floated out to sea never to be seen again all within 24 hours.

If we fail to respect the traditions, laws and customs of another faith, country, or entity, even if we don't agree with them, then we are no better than the terrorists.

Thus burying Bin Laden within 24hrs is respecting the customs of the Muslim faith, even if he didn't act like one. Hanging him in New York would have been a bad idea as at best it would have generated a lot of trouble for the USA and the state of New York, at worst the terrorists would have attacked again to try and free him. The way things have turned out is the best way possible, even though the whole situation is terrible.

I'd have to read my post again.. but I don't think I said the former administration knew his location, if I did I didn't mean that. What I heard, and what I meant was that it was the former admin's "torture tactics" on the couriers brother that lead to the knowledge of the location of Bin Laden's courier, which eventually lead to Bin Laden's location. Who knows how long that could have taken.

Which country would have volunteered to have Bin Laden body (grave)? It would have become a martyr's shrine and therefore a haven for the terrorists. Certainly BO and his advisers would have considered all the pro's and con's ahead of the attack and arranged everything down to the very minor details.

Bin Laden's body was wrapped in a white sheet, prayers were said etc. It was all done with respect to the Islamic faith. According to the Islamic faith, martyrs don't get wrapped in a white sheet.
