Out of the blue...

One of they guys I've worked with for the last almost 5 years was fired 3 weeks ago, along with 16 others. Not someone I was real close to, but someone I saw every day. He'd been having serious marital problems, with his wife about to leave him, had an alcohol problem that put him into rehab some months ago, and now this. Just learned that he killed himself, probably Monday night. Got drunk and sat in his car in the closed garage with the engine running until all the pain went away. Was an interesting day at work today.

 

And it would be nice if the guys upstairs that fired him (and the 16 others) lose a little sleep over it. They currently seem to have a fairly cavalier attitude about using the axe.

Gary, being the compassionate man you are, I hope this won't over burden you. I am sorry to hear such awful news. I do hope that maybe upper management might learn how to be more understanding and respect human value.

 

I'm sorry to hear that G.T. It hits pretty close to home when it's a co-worker.

Don't hold your breath waiting for tears from management though.

True. But the "numbers" that they cut usually just disappear and their misery is elsewhere, out of their sight. They don't usually turn up dead, on their doorstep, so to speak. One can hope.

I'm OK. Saddened by the tragic waste, but we weren't personally close, and I've had to help bury enough friends and relatives over the years that death is no stranger.

 

I am so sorry to hear this. It is really sad when someone gets so desperate, they feel there is no other choice.
