What part of the country you live in?

The basics is pretty easy, open case (if you've never done this it is the hardest part), locate the drive, pull the two cables off, remove the 4 mounting screws, remove old drive, reverse the procedure to install the new one.

    Pitfalls...

Static electricity can fry your computer without you even feeling it. Whenever you work on the machine leave one hand on the metal case at all times, it should be the first thing you touch and the last thing you let go of. Cold winters days are the worst days to work on something like this.

Standards: You need to be sure what kind of drive you are replacing. If the comptuer is older the odds are you have a IDE interface (aka, PATA, EIDE). Newer computers are using SATA interfaces more and more (almost exclusively nowdays). IDE cables are wide flat cables. SATA cables are skinny. Both are keyed where they can only go one way. Far as I know no one has messed with the power cable yet (4 wires), and it is also keyed.

Ignore what Bill_Marsden said...he didn't check that your computer is a notebook.

Do you have a manual? If not printed, it might be on a CD that came with the notebook. There is probably a section that shows you what to do to remove the optical drive.
If it seems too complicated, as a temporary workaround, you might consider buying an external DVD player or burner and attaching it to the notebook by USB to use when you need it.

I found this: If you go here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=PCGFX190K
and click on manual in the left column, then click on Primary User Manual, you can get a pdf. I've looked through it and your notebook has a CD-RW/DVD ROM drive. I can find no directions on how to remove it.

    I'll keep looking.

If it's anything like a Dell laptop, would need to remove the screen and keyboard. Not too difficult if the manual have detailed instructions.

Perhaps just get an USB external cd/dvd drive?
