Outlook has been working no problems then two days ago on opening it shut down immediatly. I cannot get it to stay open. So I downloaded Thunderbird Email program but I cannot import my email from Outlook to Thunderbird as it will not allow me to select it. I can see the pst file on the computer any ideas on how to import my mail into thunderbird or how to fix outlook.

I also tried to restore the computer to an earlier time but it fails each time. So something is going on...???

Thank you I followed those steps until I have to select the type of file to import eudora and outlook are both greyed out outlook express Text file and vcard file are in available to select. I never used outlook express. This is for address book
but I want the mail and Eudora and Outlook are greyed out and Outlook Express is available. Outlook Express is not on my computer (well I cant find it) only Outlook.

It's a problem caused by Windows update KB3097877. Try uninstalling it or using system restore to revert to an earlier point. See HERE.

If Outlook is still not working after removing KB3097877 and you still would like to use Thunderbird, you would only need to import your mail to Thunderbird if your Outlook account is still POP3. Most ppl are using IMAP rather than POP3 these days, and for an IMAP account you only have to set up your account in Thunderbird and it will find all your mail on the IMAP server.

MS posted a patched KB3097877 yesterday, this should be (re)offered next time you use Windows Update.

Thank you awesome help I uninstalled KBKB3097877 and Outlook is now working. I use POP3 don't understand IMAP perhaps I should educate myself but I also don't leave my email on the server either so this would not have helped for the emails that I keep on my computer.

I tried to import mail to Thunderbird but Outlook is still not selectable. Something still not working properly in this regards so looks like I am staying with Outlook for the time being. Thank You

If you only use a single computer and don't want to be able to pick up your emails on a phone/tablet/whatever then POP is fine. Otherwise use IMAP.

EDIT - I tried exporting/importing from Outlook 2007 to TBird and hit the same problem as you - Outlook greyed out
