Outlook 2003 missing attachements

I am having an intermittent problem receiving word attachments using Outlook 2003 on my desktop.

There is no indication of an attachment in the inbox view but in the message itself it lists <<filename.DOC>> which is followed by pages of garbage.

Yet when I check the email online the attachment is there and when I check the mail on my laptop the attachments are there.

The same person can email me another file and all is good.

There is no message in the email window saying outlook blocked unsafe attachments, only that the message may contain extra line breaks.

I'm tearing my hair out with this one as nothing on my end seems to be wrong but as its working fine on my laptop something must be different.
