getting an error message when trying to recieve emails through outlook 2003 now. error message is.

    pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com recieving reported error 0x80042110
your pop3 server is providing inconsistant information. the number of messages returned by the stat command does not match the number of intems returned by the uldl or list command.

check microsoft online and google seems like its happening but nobody has a solution.... can someone help?

You will not find your answer in Microsoft KB or on google, due to this is a SBCGlobal issue. Double check your mailbox settings (make sure that Login SPA is not checked). You can double check the settings at http://help.sbcglobal.net/article.php?item=285&f_application=outlook2002&f_os=win&action=Refresh

To locate and verify your email settings in Outlook 2002:
    1. Click on the Tools menu in Outlook.
    2. Click on E-mail Accounts.
    3. Click on View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.
    4. Select your SBC Yahoo! email account and click the Change... button.
    5. Verify these settings:
      • The Incoming mail server (POP3) and Outgoing mail server (SMTP) fieldscontain the correct mail server settings.
      • The User Name field contains your full SBC Yahoo! email address (e.g., YourName@sbcglobal.net).
      • The Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) box is NOT checked.
    6. Click the More Settings button.
    7. Click on the Outgoing Server tab.
    8. Verify these settings:
      • The box next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.
      • The radio button next to Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
    9. Click OK.
    10. Click Next.
    11. Click Finish.

Q: How to manually troubleshoot email (#10974)
    • A: From a post by lev http://i.dslr.net/bb/profile.gif at »e-mail account works intermittantly

Open up a telnet session on port 110 to pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com. Go to a command prompt and type:

TELNET pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com 110 (or whatever format your OS requires for Telnet)

      and enter the following:

USER youruserid@sbcglobal.net (or youruserid@ameritech.net depending on your account domain)
      PASS your password

If it doesn't accept the password, change it through the main account's page at »sbc.yahoo.com.

      If it does, type:

      LIST

See if anything looks funky there.

RETR followed by a number will display a message. If you want to delete it, type DELE followed by that number.

QUIT should get you out of the session.

See if this gets you on the road.

Your advise on how to handle "0x80042110" errors in Outlook was spot on. No help from Microsoft or ATT/Yahoo. Thanks.
your advise was to manually look at Yahoo server (which was the problem), the web based inbox said I had 1 message but the list command said I had 4.
