My apologies if this has been answered elsewhere. I looked but couldn't find any refernce to my particular problem. If it has been alread addressed, please direct me to the answer. Thank you.

I am using XP Pro and have lots of storage and memory

My automatic Send/Receive has stopped working with Outlook 2007.

I generate a new message and it appears in the 'Outbox', but won't send until I click the Send/Receive button in the toolbar.
It used to be that when I opened Outlook 2007 it automatically received new emails. Not any more. I have to click the button.

I tried Tools/Options/Mail Setup. There IS a check in the 'Send immediately when connected'. I opened 'Send/Receive', and all the settings appear correct. Everything is checked except 'Schedule an automatic send/receive every 5 minutes. I highlited 'All Accounts' and 'Edit'. I have 3 accounts set up and are all working when I tested them.

    I went to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and changed Outlook.srs to Outlook.old

The next time I started Outlook, it opened a new Outlook.srs file, but I am still having the not automatic send/receive problem.

I have had this problem for some time.

    Can anyone help?

    Scroller,

Just something to try. Edit all of your settings to something you don't want, (don't have Outlook on this 'puter so can't be more specific), just make sure you change and save everything. Close the program, then re-open and change to what you want.

Kind of like rebooting, can't tell how many glitches I've fixed with this approach, from printers to spell checkers! :wave:wave

    Thank you for replying, brandypepper.

I tried what you suggested, but it didn't work.

I just can't get this program to send/receive unless I click on the send/receive button in the toolbar.

When I forget to do so, and go to close the program, it reminds me. A box pops up that asks...Exit without Sending?

    Pain in the neck.

Anyone else have suggestions? I have seached the web to no avail.:cry

    Thanks again.

Again, not having Outlook makes this a guess. But I did find this article on Outlook 2003, don't know how different 2007 is.:confused

Maybe somebody reading here is using 2007?? :wave:wave

I went to the suggested website, but couldn't find anything pertinent.
Because this happened so suddenly, I"m suspecting an update, perhaps an XP update, may be the problem. Or perhaps some software is conflicting, although I don't know what it might be.
Do you know of any forums that are specific to Office 2007?
    Thanks again.

A bad update is a possibility. Can you do a system restore to prior to the problem?:wave

This has been an ongoing problem for quite awhile now. My restore doesn't go back far enough.

    Good idea, though.

I'm thinking I might have to try using Express again, or perhaps some other email program.

I'm going to try to get a solution to Outlook first though, because I like it, other than this problem.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

    Thanks for your help, USAFVeteran.
I have registered there, and am asking there if anyone has any suggestions.
    Anything else I can do?

I have Outlook 2007 and have been looking at settings. My Outlook sends a message immediately upon completing a message and clicking the Send button. But, it does not automatically receive mail when I first open it and I have not been able to resolve that.

I found this topic in the Outlook forum mentioned in my previous post: Outlook 2007 receiving pop3 email. It says:

But, that doesn't work for me. I still have to click the Send/Receive button after openging Outlook to get an intitial receiving of email. Can you post a link to your discussion there? And, what's your username in that forum?

If you want to try a different email client, Outlook Express is, of course, one option since you're using Windows XP. But, I suggest you take a look at Windows Live Mail. Its layout is more similar to Outlook and it has a calendar. You can get it at http://download.live.com/wlmail. If you download the file and start the installation and see options for installing other Windows Live components such as Messenger, Photo Gallery, etc., you can deselect those and just install the Mail component.

I quite like WLM too, but just a note of caution. It saves your contact list in an online location which AFAIK offers no facility to export it. So if you want to use a different client at some future time ............... :(

EDIT - my wife's Outlook 2007 does do an auto send/receive as soon as it opens. Always has.

That's not correct, Earthling. I just disconnected the network cable from my router for the computer on which I have WLM installed, started the computer, opened WLM (which said it had no Internet connection and asked whether I want to work offline), and was able to open and view my Contacts. I then exported to a .CSV file which I opened in Excel.

Thanks for that, and I wish I had known it a week or two ago as we had a case on another forum where we could have used it. :cry

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner.
    I travel in my job.
I'll try WLM, because I'm frustrated with Outlook.
As I said earlier, I suspect an update or upgrade or similar is responsible.
    Thanks again.

Just a cautionary footnote to this. In the other case I mentioned the guy had his hotmail account hijacked and used to send loads of spam to his addressees, after which his address book and all emails were erased. When he tried the offline sync he also had an empty contacts list on his WLM client.

Think I'll stick with TBird :(

Well, I've never used hotmail so I can't address his issue. Anyway, I'll stick with WLM, and I have no worries whatsoever about losing my Contacts or messages. They're on the hard drive, not in cyberspace. This is no different than with Windows Address Book and Outlook Express on Windows XP, or Windows Contacts and Windows Mail on Windows Vista.
How does an offline sync work? Synching what?

It's entirely different from the clients you mention. If you go to Mail on the Windows Live site and sign in with your Windows Live ID (which doesn't have to be a hotmail ID) you will find both your mail and contacts list there. The WLM client syncs with this, it doesn't store everything on your PC as OE, WM etc do. That's the Windows Live way of working.

Go back and read my previous reply, post #12. As I said, my contacts are on my hard drive. I do not need to sync with an online contacts database. I do not need to be online to open my Contacts.

Perhaps Hotmail users have the option to maintain contacts online. Again, I'm not a Hotmail user. I use WLM for POP mail with my ISP email account.

I've just installed WLM in a VM and set up an account. I had to sign in to Windows Live, as in the pic, and wasn't able to use WLM without doing so. As soon as I did my old contacts list from two years ago became available, long since removed from my computer.

So what does your WLM show in that dropdown menu?

Seems you've found a way to ride a bicycle without actually sitting on it :-D

When used that way then my warnings about WLM obviously don't apply. Aplogies to the OP for the hijack but I thought this relevant to the choice of next client.

Right. I'm using WLM as an email client for my ISP's POP email account, pure and simple. No need to login to Windows Live. WLM can be used as email client just as Outlook Express, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.

    Hello
I had the same problem and realized that in the Send/Receive button itself you have a scroll down menu including all your emails accounts and other options, and at the bottom of this menu you have "send/receive settings". The option "Disable scheduled send/receive" was checked. Don't ask me how it happened but this is what created the problem! I just uncked it and now it works after more than 1 week of trouble !!Hope it will help you

    Hi
I'm STILL not able to automatically send/receive.
Thanks for the suggestion of the disable in the drop-down list. I got all excited, until I tried it, but it, unfortunately, is not checked, so that isn't the problem.:(
Sure wish one of the gurus here could help.
But I'm thankful for you taking your time to offer suggestions. Much appreciated, thank you.

Hello. I was having the same problem and i fixed it by going into Tools/Options/Mail Setup/Send-Receive then clicked Edit with All Accounts selected on the Group Name window and in there I clicked the box "Include the selected account in this group"

Clicked Ok and then unchecked the box "send immediately when connected".

Set the automatic send/receive to 1 minute and it worked just fine.

Not sure what server you use but other servers should have a similar setup.

Let me know if it works.

    Saludos
