    Win10 & Office 2016
Have been trying to import pst files, and failed, searched net and tweaked security settings, still failed.
Have entered advanced security settings, and checked box "Replace all child object permissions entries with inheritable permission entries from this object.", and now can't open various software incl. outlook....how do i resolve?

Partially resolved, corrected folder permissions, but still can't import pst files?

Thanks, I have had a look at that link, and am still at a loss how to rectify.
Surely this should all be catered for, and very well my MS!!!
And my situation will be a little different, as I just had an HDD failure, I have re-installed Win7, upgraded to win10, and installed fresh Office 2016, hoping to import pst files from previous Office 2010.

Should i un-install Office 2016, install Office 2007, set it up and re-import *.pst files, then re-install Office 2016.....will that work?

The link I gave you does apply to the situation you are contemplating - upgrading from 2010 to 2016 - so yes, that should work. There has to be an easier way though. Maybe if you search for Office or Outlook forums you can get better help.

Just a thought - rather than trying to import your old .pst file have you tried simply adding it as a data file and opening it?

    Hi Smurph

Could you type the steps you are taking to import the .pst just so I can see the steps you are using.
Mine would be Import/Export > Import from another program or file > Outlook data file (.pst) and then find the file (make sure its on your C: Drive (Desktop is good and not coming off a USB pen or external drive) and choose replace duplicates and import (next) and see how you go.

If the email addresses, contacts and Calendar data are in email accounts like Outlook mail (Hotmail, Live etc), Gmail then as these are online accounts the data is saved in the cloud, so maybe an option to add new account and use your current email address and password to setup that way rather than a .pst, I tend to use this route. May not work with some email accounts I didnt list above and if you use your work based email, unless off Exchange and then your IT team should set that up for you.

I go to File > Open&Export > Open Outlook data File AND Import/Export ()tried bot), and get the error message "File access is denied. You do not have permission required to access the file c:\path_name". From downloads folder on C drive.
I have tried re-setting all types of permissions as instructed in various websites to no avail.
I have 3 pst files, one for my previous outlook and saved folders, and two other for gmail accounts (but these last two aren't vital).

    1. Copy and Paste the PST file you want to import into a different folder, then try the import. The copy process will fix the permissions.
    2. If that doesn't do it, search your C drive for SCANPST which is M$ repair utility for Outlook files. Run it, browse to the copy you made in step 1 and, if it says it needs fixing, uncheck the create a backup copy (you already have one), and fix it. Then try importing that file.
If neither works, post back, OK?

Cheers for the resolution to this and I agree things are never easy, I'm toying with an update from Office 2013 to Office 365 today, like to keep current as work does and some new options in Excel and Access as I use them a lot for work stuff.
