Outlook express 6 critical update problem

Discussion in 'Software' started by the new tech guy, Aug 15, 2005.

  1. Hello,
I am running outlook express 6 service pack 1 on windows 2000 service pack 4 operateing system. I am haveing a problem with a security patch from windows update for it. (just installed the damn thing too  ) The update name is cumulative security Update for Outlook Express SP1 (KB823353). When it would install the update it would work like a normal update but when it installs it would just jump all the way up on the progress bar after a minute of hd activity doing i dunno what. Then it would say the update was successful and then a few seconds later it would come up saying it wants to install the same update again. I ran antivirus+spyware scans which came up clean. If anyone has any ideas or ways to fix the problem it would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

  2. So what should i do with it? Should i contact microsoft about the problem and ask them what i should do with it? Or try installing it manually with the link you gave me? Because i am running outlook express 6 with the latest updates so it should go in regardless right? And im even useing internet explorer 6. I have the microsoft update on it as well. Could that have something to do with it? Cause if i dont need it i will take it off if someone can tell me how to remove it. But i will try to install through the link. I will write back when im done to tell you how it goes.

  3. Yes that is exactly what it is doing. It tried installing the update from the page you showed me, saved the file, then when i ran the setup file it said that the update requires windows xp. But yet when auto update does it it acts like it had no problem then tells me i need to install it again. and it even comes up update successful. I checked for viruses, spyware and im clean. Im surprised that im running as much xp software on 2k as i am now. I hid the update and the icon went away from my taskbar for now. So what do i do next? Cause it comes up on each account on the computer.

  5. Now will this make the other update go away? Cause this computer is updated whenever there is a windows update availible i usually go through and check everything for updates. So i dunno how this came up if it checks to see what version im useing though. Well i will install what shadow said to and see if im still getting the other one. (the other one is hidden right now) let you know when im done.

  6. Well now this is really weird cause now its saying that i need to install outlook express six service pack one which i already have on the computer.

Shouldn't, ought to be just like you are upgrading OE.

  10. Now that I am done the sfc /scannow i try the update that shadow gave me and check for others?

  11. Right after i did the repair i tried the update that shadow offered and it still gives the same message that i need outlook express service pack 1.

    OE6SP1 comes with IE6SP1, do a repair install of IE6 and OE6.

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm

  13. But i should use that update you gave me to replace the winxp update that windows gives me?

  14. Now see theres one thing i didnt try. Restarting the computer. I will do that now then come back and see if anything helped.

  15. nope restart didnt help.

Yes, use the one I gave you, Do a repair install or reinstall of IE6SP1.

  17. I did the thing from that site that shadow told me about with the registry to no avail. So now should i just consider doing a windows 2k repair? Cause i tried doing each step except the repair which i am guessing is equivilant to doing a normal repair in windows 2k? if there is a way to fix the problem without touching my account settings in outlook express it would be greatly appreciated to be told how. Thanks for the help so far

You don't need to do a repair install of 2k, just unistall IE6/OE6 and reinstall; or you can just try doing a upgrade install IE6/OE6 with SP1 by going to the IE6 link I gave you and downloading IE6SETUP and running it.

If the above does not work, then try uninstalling:

    KB897715 (MS05-030)

Then see if you can install KB823353 (MS04-018). If successful, re-install:

    KB897715 (MS05-030)

Found this from within Microsoft Communities:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=fda6678b-69b0-4813-9856-a1a3da675baf
would be the correct one for Windows 2K and Windows XP *without* SP2
    installed.

Just as a summary, the order would be:

    #1 KB823353:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=AD6A96BC-DAF0-4EAB-89B8-BD702B3E3E5D

    #2 KB887797
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=fda6678b-69b0-4813-9856-a1a3da675baf
    for Windows 2000/XP *without* SP2

    #3 KB897715:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=89e4d8ee-4d8e-4660-a53d-28502b3d2518
for Windows 2000/XP *without* SP2 (there's no KB897715 for Windows XP with
    SP2 installed, but KB900930).

  21. Well i think installing over everything worked. Cause the update just went in. Im gonna go back to windows update and see if the other update is gone. i will come back with info when i am done.

  22. Well it seemed that shadows idea worked. I installed internet over evrything that was there and restarted. Then i came back onto here and installed the update shadow gave me which worked. Then i went back to see if there are any other updates that need to be installed. At that point I think i saw the one theefool was talking about and put that on and now im just gonna restart one more time for safe keeping and everything seems fine now so thanks guys :)

P.S.: I still cant beleive that im already haveing problems with things and this windows install is like about a month or a little less old!
One more question remains, why is it whenever i start up outlook that my instant messenger launches automatically with it. It does not sign on but it starts up. If there is a way to seperate the two please let me know.
    thanks again

Is this outlook or outlook express?

  24. Shadow_Puter_Dude

That's Windows Messenger not MSN Messenger. Shoot the Messenger

  25. No aol instant messenger is doing it. It like makes outlook hang until i minimize it or something. I dont have problems with windows messenger. And AOL really has to do something with instant messenger because it SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! It bogs up the pc at random times, it does weird stuff like that, and the install comes with like 4 other programs lol. Ok my rampage about it is done. Just tell me how to remove the two from starting together and all will be fine. Thanks again for all the help. Or better yet if you can give me a third party program that does all the stuff aim will without the crap that aim gives you and can connect to aim users that would be the best. Thanks again for the help
    -the new tech guy

  26. Once i shut down the windows one with shoot the messenger, Do I need to run it again or run it once and i dont need it again? Cause i ran it straight from the download source and it stopped it then i closed the program. So i guess that is all i have to do to it? But if you can give me a solution to the problem of the two programs running together that would be great.
    thanks

Once you shot the messenger that's it. It will never open again unless you install it. Outlook Express opens Windows Messenger at OE Start; and it is very annoying and MS still hasn't fixed that. Now that you have run Shoot the Messenger you should never see it again.

  28. But its not msn messenger thats popping up its aol instant messenger (aim) and it is very annoying but thanks for the tip off on the windows one. At least now i know that was shut down.

Just go to Add or Remove Programs and uninstall it, if you don't use it. If you want AOL IM then open it and go to settings and change the settings so that it doesn't open with OE and at windows start.

  30. But there is no option on turning off its launch when i use outlook. Im useing it right now and going through the settings and i see no option to disable it when i use an email client.

  31. Wait i just figured out the problem. It was because aol was told it is the default instant messageing program and once i told it it wasnt it stopped comeing up. Thanks for the help.

  32. Sorry bout that shadow. Well im in good shape now. Thanks for the help everyone.

    Hey New Tech Guy

I tried to install the same patch (KB823353) on a Windows 2K Server SP4, this morning. My computer is behaving exactly the same as yours. I get a message saying the installation was successful but Automatic Updates keeps wanting to install it over and over again. I have checked Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs and the patch does not show as being installed.

I think Microsoft has something screwed up. I'm not going to take any action at this point. Hopefully, MS with get this straightend out shortly.

Please post if anything turns up.

This is the update you want.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BC-DAF0-4EAB-89B8-BD702B3E3E5D&displaylang=en

  38. Well Pokeyboy do what we did in the post to fix the problem on my computer. First try shadow's update. If you cannot install that you go and do an upgrade install of internet explorer (which includes outlook express) it should be somewhere in that page shadow gave me. Do that, restart your computer, then try that update and it should work. At that point the update in windows update for xp whould disappear (I hid it so the notification would go away and after we installed the other update it wasnt there at all so hide the update first). At that point i check for updates manually and found one other update to install and install that it will go through normally. At that point it should be all fixed and you should be all set. If you are have the aim trouble that i had all you have to do is go under preferences, singn on/off and uncheck the box that says "make aim my default messageing program and it will stop comeing up when you launch outlook express. Thats all you have to do to fix the problem.

Thanks Shadow and New Tech Guy!

I was a little reluctant to down my server for this update but finally decided to "go for it". I followed your lead and everything went OK. I had to re-install IE6 and then do all of the updates. Things seem to be working and Auto Updates isn't nagging me anymore.

    Thanks again,
    PokeyBoy

  40. Glad to hear everything worked out for ya! :) and your quite welcome for the help.

I now have this same problem. I only have sp1 WinXP. Any ideas how I can get this to stop coming up in winupdate? Thx.

Install Service Pack 2. Is there a compelling reason why you haven't done this yet? By not installing SP2 you are leaving your system vulnerable to all sorts of exploits and malware.
