I have started to get pop-up invitations several times each day to compress
my OE. ["To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages."]

I have ample spare space on disk (82%). I do have a lot of folders in OE.

I respond usually once a day but that does not stop the messages
    coming.

Clearly something is amiss here; has anyone got any ideas?

Yep, let it compact. Then, the annoying alerts will stop.

That's not the point. OE will automatically prompt you to compact messages after OE has been closed 100 times since the last time messages were compacted. The compacting procedure helps keep mail messages optimized for better OE performance. You could say it's similar to defragmenting files on your hard drive but, in this case, it's just OE files.

So, let OE do it's thing. Once compacting starts, do not interrupt it. It may seem to take a long time if you've accumulated a lot mail. Again, let it complete the procedure.

Thank you to all who responded and my apologies for not getting back sooner but my ISP EMail service has been out of order until just now.

The only file that was over-burdened was the sent file and I have cleared this out. I will wait with bated breath to see if that does the trick.
