We have two PCs, both running XP Service Pack 3. For the last week on one PC something has been moving the contents of the Outlook Express dbx folders to the Recycle Bin and renaming them as .bak files. Note that the folders don't get deleted, just their contents. I have run Spyware Doctor, Spybot SD, and Ad-Aware. No joy. Any ideas? Is there a virus or Trojan specifically targeting Outlook Express? TIA.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

I seriously doubt this has anything to do with malware. If you want to spend the time to check, you can run the below procedure. Otherwise I would suggest posting in the Software Forum.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

OK, I may have found the, or at least a, solution. Microsoft described a very similar problem in their Knowledge Base article KB918069, dated July 11, 2007. It appears that upgrading to Service Pack 3 may have caused the problem to return.
