    Recently changed ISP and have tried to switch Outlook Express to my new mail server. In the accounts section I've entered the new (absolutely correct] info, my new email address, etc, and sending mail is no problem. But when I try to receive mail, that ridiculous window pops up asking for my password. I get an error message telling me that my mail server has rejected my password. I've used OE for many years and have always been able to work-around this same issue...what gives??

    Are your email providers allowing people to use OE instead of web interface, i know for instance that hotmail is not allowing new accounts to use OE at all.

    Also note that your incomming and outgoing use different ports so it mite be worth making sure firewalls arnt restricting incomming mail?

    It doesn't happen on my laptop which is wireless to the same ISP. It just seems to be a stubborn issue on the main PC. My ISP does allow OE as an email client.

    So the password you are entering is the exact same one that logs you onto your ISP webmail? If your ISP does not have on-line webmail, you can test the password at www.mail2web.com .

    Also, if you type in the correct password, does it work once, and then ask you for your password anyway next time? There is a known issue where a certain corrupt registry key causes Outlook Express to "forget" the password.

    My ISP has webmail, and I can logon OK. I can also send mail OK on OE, but I can't receive mail without that pop-up window asking for my password to the server. Of course, even you DO enter my password, it pops back up and denies entry anyway.
    I'll try my registry repair utility and see if it identifies an issue.

    Possible that the folders.dbx file is corrupt. Try renaming any instances of it and let Outlook recreate it on next start up.

    Hmm... Even if the settings are correct, the account registry keys, etc. themselves might be corrupt. Delete the existing account(s) from the problem outlook (tools->accounts->mail tab->remove, export them from the working laptop via tools->accounts->mail tab->export, transfer the resulting "iaf" file(s) to the problem desktop, and bring them in via tools->accounts->mail tab->import. Hopefully, that will resolve the problem. The folder.dbx idea is a good one as well.

    If all else fails, you can try a new OE identity (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/209169/en-us), set up the account in the new identity, and import the information from the old identity as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670/en-us.

    Hope this helps, and sorry for the grilling about the passwords and webmail, it's just that when you get asked for a password, the password is usually the problem! :) I'm betting the new identity fixes all, but let us know if you need any further help!

    Hi cthor
    It's possible that the POP3 "port number" in use is the default of "110". My ISP uses "995", yours may be different.

    For the Outlook Express Main Identity select:
    Tools->Accounts->
    (pop-up)Internet Accounts->(tab)Mail->(button)Properties->
    (pop-up)POPServer.Domain.Suffix Properties->(tab)Advanced->

    Server Port Numbers
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): (text-box) 25
    (check-box) This Server requires a secure Connection (SSL)
    Incoming mail (POP3): (text-box) ???? You need this value to be the same on both computers
    (check-box) This Server requires a secure Connection (SSL)
    My ISP requires SSL - If yours does, click the check-box.:)
