The POP and SMTP server settings are provided by your ISP. Most ISP's have simple guides on their websites for common tasks like this.

Some services will allow you to use email clients, others will not. Yahoo for example wants you to pay a small monthly fee to use an email client. At any rate, the protocol for these things are specific to the service you're trying to link too. The settings for using Yahoo will be different than Hotmail or other services.

As indicated in previous posts, most ISPs provide their users with a POP3-capable email account. However, numerous other, i.e. non-ISP-based, email services will work with an email client; you need to obtain the settings from them and this info is normally available on their website. Examples of email services that can be used with an email client (for POP3 or IMAP accounts) are Google's gmail, GMX, and FastMail. Some provides, such as FastMail, charge a small fee. FastMail costs $4.95 per year and may be well worth the cost for a very reliable email service.

If you can't get what you need from the web site or don't know how to do the setup, and if they have a Free support phone number,
    call for support.

You may have to wait a bit, but they will walk you through it (if you can be online while on the telephone),
tell you what goes where and have you Test it before you finish.

You're assuming he's already created part of the account setup. If he has not done so, then he will need to click on Add, after going to Tools, Accounts, to start the setup for a new account. If he has already begun the account creation during a previous session and needs to edit the Properties for the account, then he would go to Tools, Accounts, select the account (if more than one account exists), and then click on Properties. At that point, he might also need to select the Mail tab if not already selected.

Also, you've oversimplified the setup in Properties. He may need to also select the Advanced tab in the account properties screen and change the port #s shown there and also perhaps change the setting regarding whether the server requires a secure connection. All these points should be provided in info obtained from the email account provider.

Your comments apply to an ISP-based account, and perhaps to a fee-based non-ISP account but, for a free non-ISP POP3 or IMAP account, he's not likely to get an telephone support. In those cases, the info must be obtained from the website or perhaps from a support/user forum.
