I recently had to re-install XP due to stupidity on my part. In the process, I seem to have lost my Outlook Express address book entires and all my email files that I had saved.
Since I am a computer dummy(don't even ask if I have a back up!!), I have know idea if they are still in the computer, and if they are, how to get them restored.
Also, all the application software that I have loaded is still on the hard drive, but I can get anything to work properly...

    Any ideas?? (be gentle!)

    Tks Roy

Hello Roy, Welcome to Major Geeks!

The first thing you'll want to do is to tell us all the specifics on your computer. Start with what kind of Processor you have, how many hard drives and how big, how much memory you have, your Operating System (I know you said XP, but is it Home or Professional?)

After that, tell us what you did when you reloaded. Did you do a repair, an install over the top, or a complete format?

Is your hard drive divided up into different sections, called Partitions?

If you need help finding out this info, let us know, we can give you a hand with that too!

    :)

    First, open My Computer.
    Doubleclick on C drive
If is says files are hidden, click show files (I don't know if this is actually nessesary but it wont hurt.)
At the top of the page go Tools-Folder Options
    Select the "View" tab
Click the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button.
    Click Apply or OK

Now Go Start - Search - and choose "all files and folders". Also click "more advanced options". Don't worry.
Check the box "search hidden files and folders" .

OK, in the "all or part of file name" box type *.wab

You may get a bunch of wab files.

a wab file is an Outlook Express mail file. Your mail and address book are probably the largest of those files.

Once you know where that file is, open Outlook Express and From the file menu, Import that file into your new Outlook express. You will have to browse to the location where the wab file is.

Presto, you have your mail back, but it's still not gonna work until you re-setup your mail account and specify servers, username and password.

You will have to re-install your applications that no longer work.

    Hi Eric!

OK here's what I know...I have a Pentium 3 with a 10gig HD, The XP is the home version.
What I did was re-install XP, and I think I installed overtop, but I'm not sure. I wnet to the CD and clicked on Install...ALl my programs are still on the computer, but none work since I appear to be missing a file called MSVCP70.dll
My email works, but of corse all my files and address book info is missing...
Oh..and my drive is not partitioned..

    Apprec your help...

    Roy
