    Hi folks,

I'm hoping someone knows how to fix this. I've been running Microsoft Office 2003 without issue, then as of yesterday, (no updates ran or anything) then all of a sudden when I go to reply or create an email, I get "starting microsoft word 2003 as your editor... and then it freezes and hangs up.
I've tried a detect and repair, didn't work. Then tried to run both windows and microsoft updates, no updates available. Not sure what to do from here, except to uncheck word as my editor in tools.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to be able to fix or repair, so I can continue using word as my editor again?

    Thanks so much,

    Sunny

Yes, I've done that, but would like to continue using word as my email editor, so I am trying to find either a fix or repair that I can do. Any suggestions?

    Hi

Is your Office 2003 fully upto date with Service Pack 3? if not then update http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923618

Delete the normal.dot file as you could have a corrupted one that is causing issues with Outlook, to do this.........

    • Close all instances of Office applications
    • As normal.dot is a hidden system file it may not show when you search for it without unhiding hidden files and folders, to unhide folders and files click My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > click the View Tab and put a check where it says "Show hidden files and folders" and untick "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files", then apply or OK.
    • The click Start > Search and search for normal.dot, once found rename if multiple copies of them to normal.old
    • then reboot, you dont need to in really but well work recreating the new normal.dot file this way.

*can also find the actual folder by pasting this into an address bar in a folder or the browser C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates ( <your user name> = what you call your account )

What is your Antivirus application? if Norton then disable the Office Plugin http://support.microsoft.com/kb/329820 and see if that helps as the Norton plugin can cause many various random issues in office, disabling it doesnt cause security problems as the live scanning from the antivirus is still working to protect you.

    Thank you Halo,

Your suggestion about the normal.dot file did the trick, and I did reboot, then turned the editor back on and it's working.

I did have service pk 3 for office on there, and had been running both windows and microsoft to check for updates, but they didn't have any for me.
    But this did the trick!

By the way, my antivirus is Bitdefender, would that one have caused the problem?

I've ran into a new issue with script debugging with Just-In-Time, wonder if that may have something to do with my Antivirus or do you think it might be something else?

Thanks again so much for your help,

    Kitti

Bitdefender, most likely not, at times it could just be one of those things and you ended up with a corrupted normal.dot file, although Word likely would have still worked ok, its link to Outlook as the editor may not have been in your case, but good its now working.

As for the Script Debuger, does this happen in Outlook or IE?

You can turn if of if its enabled as many times its not an issue with your PC but the server its connecting too, to turn off goto in IE > Tools > click Advanced tab and look for both

Browsing > Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)
Browsing > Disable script debugging (other)

    and untick the both.
