AMD Athlon 64X2 dual core +4400 2.31GHz; 3518Gb RAM, Vista Premium 32 bit OS. What would I gain by overclocking? Is it possible on a Dell machine? Heating issues? Is there any point to overclocking? Just looking to squeeze any available performance out of this heap.

Dell's cannot be overclocked. Dell prohibits (eg, disables) these bios options to prevent customers from messing up their own PCs and then trying to contact Dell for warranty service and repair. In my opinion, for an average user, there is nothing to be gained by overclocking except a premature burial for your PC.

Make sure your facts are facts before posting. 1). Every "computer" no matter the form can be overclocked, the only variable is the degree of difficulty. and 2). Not only are Dell systems overclockable, Dell actually makes overclocked systems.

jbass2007: We first need to know what you use your system the most for, we also need more detailed information. Like what motherboard, videocard, PSU and ram your running for starters.

I use this machine for video capture/editing mostly. Light gaming, internet use, word processing......basic stuff, I guess. I have 4GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz RAM, NVIDIA GEforce 6150SE.......dont know motherboard or the other one. Where can I find that info? Vista dosent really like to divulge detailed comp info like that.......:D

If thats all you use it for overclocking wont really be worth the trouble.

They should be telling you to get a dedicated video card and do away with onboard video. ;) That will make for a huge speed boost in games as well as speed up your system ram.

now that you mention it, ive been looking around for a dedicated card. any recommendations? the guys at my local shop are always trying to sell me on the expensive stuff........also, they said something about what type of socket my computer has? no idea what that means.......just looking for something inexpensive, yet useful.

I would think a 9600GT would match up nicely with your other specs. Take a look here ;)
