Overclocking my 3000+ Barton

So, I've decided to try my hand at some gentle overclocking. Nothing too drastic... just a little performance gain is all I need :)

    Some specs worth mentioning:
    AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.2Ghz @ FSB333
    Crucial PC2700 RAM DDR333
    Abit AN7 Ultra 400
    GeForce4Ti 4200

I know.. my ram is crappy... and its always whats failed on me in the past (when overclocking).

So, I raised the FSB to 171Mhz, without touching any of the other settings.... windows booted up real slow, and it wasnt AT ALL stable... but windows did boot up, eventually. back off down to 168Mhz, and changed the FSB/DRAM ratio to 4:3. My calculations say the ram should now be running at 250Mhz. (effective), which is an underclock.

Now, heres the weird part, I was under the impression that increacing the FSB would increace the CPU clock speed. Apparently not. Anyone got any ideas?

Increasing the FSB should increase the speed, but you only raised it by 2. The barton starts at 166 for a 333 mhz core. (it is doubled. my 266 mhz FSB only shows 133 in the bios when at stock speeds) If you can raise the multiplier, do so, but that little bit isnt even worth it. Its gonna take a lot more than that to change speed.

Hey goldfish....why would you need more power. You got a real nice cpu!

Ohh...trying to get a little more for folding..huh...

Neo, do you always repeat what the last person said by rewording it into your own words? Trying to inflate your post count or what?

There are tons of other posts where you've done this as well.

Have an original thought man, or if you don't know, don't post.

Post count doesn't equal status, or intelligence here.

Thank you Adrenalyne. If goldy wants to overclock, dont ask why? he wanted help, and you really look bad when you do that. im just a newb here at mg, and i think its dumb. maybe i sound stupid now, but I just wanted to make a point.

Maybe it did raise the speed, but cpuZ didnt pick it up. While overclocking my 2400 i saw that with little adjustments, cpuZ didnt see the increase. Now i use Aida32. It sees everychange i make, and shows the correct cpu speed.

Try using aida32 to check it out, If there is still no change, maybe where overlooking something.

You can do much more with your 3000+ but you will pay the price with heat. Currently I have my 3000+ running at 2600mhz, 1.80vcore. Idle temp at around 48C/28C cpu/mb and under load, 55C/29C. These temps are kinda high for my comfort level so I think that I will back it back down soon. Please see below for specs.

Also, visit http://forums.amd.com/ for more info on overclocking.

Make a new thread regarding this.

You have the FSB set wrong, most likely.

Yeah, I wanted to get a very small edge with the old folding.

I love this CPU, its great, there's no NEED for me to overclock it, I just want to push it a little and see if I can eek a little more out of it.

I'm not going to be able to do much with it ATM, its WAY too hot outside/inside at the moment for that.

Hmm... thats odd, i am such an idiot... I know, but WHY is my AMD XP 2400+ running at 2gHz... yours is 2.1, and you have 3000+ why is that?

I might be wrong, but isin't 336.6MHz of BUS Speed very GOOD?

  14. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

its only 167 in actuality, thats just the CPU Bus speed, not the FSB. you can get faster chips. 400MHz is the max as far as Athlon XP's go, AFAIK

Wow never knew there was a limit to athalon xp's on their fsb. Thanx goldfish for your post. Very informational ;).

Got it up to 171FSB, but its not stable. My cooling isnt good enough to up the VCore too much, but a little increace makes 171 more stable, and 169 is solid. F@H is whizzing along ;)

Nope, this isnt at ALL stable. Better wait till I get some better cooling. 168 does me fine ;)

Ah ok. Where can I get a boot up screen kinda like Tom's Hardware Guide. It shows after the booting up in a Dos format, it shows all the Statistics in a Service Pack 1 Window just when the compy booted up. Ex the 5ghz Project.

Cause I didnt see any boot screens in that video....

Goldfish ,it's not unlocked is it? If i was you could easily get 3200+ speeds.

  22. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Nope, it isnt unlocked, unfortunatley :(

  23. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Dammit, a 2500 would overclock better then that, lol. WHy dont you pick up a 2500 or a 2400 mobile, wicked overclockers and theyre reaaaly cheap, and you could use your 3000 fan on it if you dont have another one.

  24. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Err, haw about.. NOE! a 2500 isnt going to outperform my 3000+ at stock, thats for sure....even if it is a Mobile.

  25. Max Powerz

    Max Powerz Sergeant

Heh, i'm just saying, its to bad its not unlocked cause the multiplier on the 3000s to high, still really fast at stock tho.

  26. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

Yeah, this is true. I'm not all that bothered about speed really, its fast enough as it is :D

If I get another system, I might go for a Mobile see what happens :)
