I just bought a laptop that is still under warranty. Last night it shut down after a while. No gaming. Just regular browsing. It was overheated. I woke up today and plugged it in. Within a few minutes the temp on one core of the CpU was 75C max and it felt like it was almost burning my leg. What's going on? Should I ship it back?

It is in a regular room temperature room.

    I don't block the vents.

If, as you say, it's still under warranty, then I would return it.

Laptop computers are not intended to be on your lap, bed, covers, etc. They can overheat on any of the above surfaces or cause burned skin as you stated.

I use an AKASA AK-NBC-01 twin fan cooler and that keeps mine lovely and cool!!! had a max core temp of 57 but mostly is around the 37 mark, well worth the £10 i paid for it 5yrs ago with this very machine i am on now, it also has the added advantage of extra usb 2.0 ports (3 but one is used by cable to get power). But as you say that yours is still under warranty i would return it,maybe needs some fresh thermal paste applying!!!.
