Overheating modem (?)

Hello. I have a Speedtouch ST516-V6 modem which would appear to be overheating. Access to the web is fine when all the lights are on, but after approx 30 mins-2hours all the lights go out. Then the power light will fade in and out slowly. This will last about 30 mins, then it will reboot itself and all will be good for the next 30 mins. If I blow gently thru the grills it will reboot almost immediately but turn itself off quicker (!) I have a new one ordered, but wondered if there is anything I can 'play' with on the old one to make it useable as a spare/backup. Thanks in advance. Nick

I had a similar problem. This is how I solved it. :major

 

if heat is the case, there are many computer parts designed to shutdown after reaching the maximum amount of heat that it can withstand such as processors (there is a thermocouple of some sort in the socket that monitors the temperature and when it gets too hot it makes it stop until the component is cool enough to function people mostly take this as a virus that freezes the machine and takes it into a shop, i've seen this kind of thing before)

the best thing you can do is to go out or on the web and find a good quality fan to keep it cool also remember to dust the inside of the machine regularly since the fans blow inward they can also suck in dust and blow it directly at the parts that it is cooling this buildup of dust makes the components cool slower and get hot faster a good spray with dust off should do the trick
