Ow! Got me again!

    I am not sure if this is left over from the last clean or a new issue on the same computer.

    After last time, I dropped AVG and installed Avira. The first day Avira caught 2 files and, I thought, dealt with them. I did a full scan and it found 3 more problems (this was last Thur). Again Avira dealt with them. 2 days later it caught one more file and dealt with it.

    There were no other symptoms, other than Avira saying the above.

    Today, I find that my google search result are being re-directed (again)! I ran another full scan using Avira, but it didn't seem to clean very well. So I ran the required set of scans.

    Certainly, I have neither downloaded from or visited dodgy sites and my email is pasteurized before I get it.

    The strange thing is that when Avira was alerting me about files, I was doing nothing - literally the PC was idle.

    Results are attached.

    Thanks
    David

    You didn't have these issues when we finished up a week or so ago. This is all new infections.

    You have signs of a DNS hijacker infection that has mostly been removed. The infection you have is known to infect router hardware. If you have a router hooked up then you need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup. After doing this, continue with on with the below.

    Download HostsXpert and then follow the below steps.

    * Unzip HostsXpert.zip
    * It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
    * Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
    * Click the Make Writeable? button. (if you only see a Make Read-Only selection, it is already writeable so skip this button).
    * Click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
    * Click the X to exit the program

    You still show two AV's:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG9
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVIRA
    C:\Documents and Settings\David\Application Data\AVG8
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\AVG Free.lnk
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Avira AntiVir Control Center.lnk
    C:\$AVG
    Please delete all but the Avira folder.

    I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

    * Please download TDSSKiller to your Desktop
    * Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    * Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    * Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    * When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\TDSSKiller.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thanks TimW for your advice and quick response.

    I had cleaned up the desktop so that there were only links and small text files. I will have another go at it.

    The router/firewall I have is IPCop - not sure how I am going to set back to default - or if I need to. It has always been very robust.

    All outside signs of infection seemed to have gone.

    Logs attached.

    Your runkeys are still showing a wareout infection. Though it doesn't show in your HJT log, so let's do this:

    Please download FixWareout by LonnyRJones from one of the two below links and save it to your desktop.

    http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

    * Run Fixwareout.
    * Click Next,
    * then Install,
    * make sure Run fixit is checked
    * and click Finish.
    * The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
    * You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
    * Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

    When you run fixwareout, just follow the prompts, you will need to restart when prompted.

    After rebooting (restart) back into normal boot mode, make sure you have all web browsers closed.

    * Go into Control Panel -->Network Connections.
    * Right click on your connection
    * and click Properties.
    * On the Properties page, highlight Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)
    * Click Properties. This will bring up another page.
    * Select Obtain DNS Server Automatically.
    * Click the ok button. The page will close.
    * Press ok on the page in front of you.
    * Restart the computer.
    * Reconnect to the Internet using Internet Explorer.
    * Now come back here and attach the log from fixwareout. It is located at c:\fixwareout\report.txt

    Sorry...I forgot it was no longer supported. ( See how long it's been since I used those?? LOL).

    Let's do this:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
    to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Sweet!!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners.They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to tahe cleaning procedures ian step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
      a
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    All done!
