What is the significance of having own domain in a webhost?

I mean if i apply for a paid webhost service without registering for my own domain, will there be any ill consequence?

Most hosts have a temporary subdomain setup so you can get to your site and work on it while your domain is transferring so if you have no domain, then you could use temp domain that they assign to you to get to your site. However, most (if not all) require you to have a domain before you can purcahse a hosting account. But why on earth would you not want to get a domain?

Well if you want your pesonal ID on the Internet to be, mrBig.hostservice.com,

instead of mrBig.com then there is No significant difference.

I use www.1and1.com. for 4.95 a month which is like 29.00 every 6 months. They host my site and register my upper level domain name. No extra charge for the domain registration, which boggles. My site is a work in progress, but here's an example of what i did real quick with a template on their web based gui - www.aarcomputer.com

BTW, I was able to search to find that the name was available, list it with them and sign up all in one process.

tech, have you checked to see who your domain is registered under? As a rule of thumb I often tell people to never register through a host as the host sometimes registers the domain under their name. This can make it difficult for you to move your domain to a different host.

Good point, and I took a chance there. However, this is the largest hosting service in the world, no kidding, and I plan to be there "forever." I was paying $35 a year to register, plus hosting fees before.

I actually have my own web (IIS) and email servers (exchange) and could do it myself. However mine are just for my own lab work and I don't want the responsibility to keep the servers up, working, and secure including, say, having a dmz.

Your point is well taken. I wanted only a web presence with an upper level name, down and dirty, and for me it works.

Your warning for those who don't know what a hassle it can be to get some hosts to release/change the registration to you or another host is well taken.

That's cool. I just like to watch people's backs with choices like this. It irks me that hosts dupe customers like this so I wanted to make sure, for the original posters sake, that I mentioned it.

I'm really glad you did, and in retrospect I feel a bit responsible that I didn't mention it early on.

Don't worry, I'll figure out several ways to get banned eventually.
