Hello all. First post here. Looks like a lot of users, so hopefully I'll get a lot of feedback.

I currently have a XP2500+ and the noise levels of everything is quite loud when compared to some other computers that I've used (which were P4 systems...probably Northwoods).

Anyway, I want to upgrade to get a bit caught up as well as deal with the noise factor.

I read a lot about how the LGA775 runs fairly hot. As a result, do they run louder than the 478 P4's? How does it compare in terms of noise against the AMD64? (I'm talkin stock coolers for now. I know there's more silent solutions out there...)

I really dont understand what you are asking here, a CPU make zero sound. What you here are 2 things either your hard drive or the CPU fan/case fans.

I have never heard a CPU make noise and I have completed burn tests with AMD's using no fans.

Sorry if the wording of the question was confusing. I'm talking about the HSF for each CPU, whether stock or otherwise (only air solutions... not H2O cooling). I've found that on whatever rig me or my peers have owned using an AMD CPU from Duron to XP using various HSFs, they haven't exactly been the quietest system around. On 3 various P4's I've used so far, I have barely noticed the noise (other than a wire hitting the fan on one occasion).

To me, it seemed that AMD setups make more noise in general.

Is this still the case with the AMD64 in terms of volume level?
Do the current P4's (with your basic HSF) still run as quiet?

Your not listening, the noise you hear is from the Hard drive or power supply, AMD or Intel makes no difference. A noisy power supply will be noisy no matter what chip is in in. If you buy a cheap system it will be noisy more then likely and you can get a cheap system in AMD and INTEL

I am an AMD fan myself, but i will COMPLETELY agree with you for one reason...

until the Athlon64's AMD did not have an Integreated Heat Spreader on their processors. this required more cooling to keep the temperatures down.

However, now that they DO have an IHS, they are just as cool and quiet as any pentium4 system.... and faster ;)

I would recommend an athlon64 socket 939 system, i've built 3 now and am amazed at their speed and operating temperature in comparison to the athlon XP's.

Yeah I agree and I have used Intels your years and still do, but I did come across a Athlon64 939 the other day and it was pretty quite, I gess the heat spreader over the core ( a la Intel ) helps plus the fan used on the HS was a 92mm one rather than 80mm so pushes similar air at a slower rpm thus slightly quieter.

the rest of the noise comes from Case fans.. even the type of case and where the fans are positioned, PSU fans, HDs all contribute noise.

Thanks for the feedback from the previous 2. That was exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Now for upgrade advice... Considering both outlets, I plan on spending from 1 to 2 bills on the CPU. Which would be the best choice on both sides of the aisle?

Question for you: are you going to use your current video card in the new system? or are you going to buy a new one?

if you are going to buy a new one, I would recommend going PCI-Express. It will cost more, but benefit you longer. That said, here are my recomendations on CPU.

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939 (Winchester core) http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80701-2

if you stay with an AGP card, grab the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80701-2-241143
If you are going to buy a PCI-E card, grab the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=240418

    Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 3.0ghz 800mhz FSB http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80661

or OEM and choose a nice (quiet) heatsink/Fan http://www.newegg.com/app/viewprodu...163&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=Microprocessors+PC

BUT, if you want to go PCI-E with intel, you have to go for an LGA-775 (Socket T) processor like the Pentium 4 540 http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80806

keep in mind those have a prescott core, which is slower than Northwood.

IMO, the AMD64 3200+ Winchester will smoke all of these, and it has 64-bit capability for the future (or for fooling around with now)...
