    AMD = power
    Intel = reliability
    IMHO.........

    I haven't seen any Turion chipsets out there for laptops.. I'd go centrino (intel) for a lappy.

    Fujitsu Siemens and ACER have a few out at present, I've been looking into getting a notebook, for home and work... more home tho, settled on an AMD64 either HP zv6025ea or Compaq R4025ea depends which one I find at retailers first!

    While that is good advice on gaming and going AMD, if you are gaming on a laptop but aslo forget onboard graphics ( shared memory ) you will need a dedicated GFX card as well to get good performance current games.

    i agree with Kodo, go for a centrino on a notebook, this will also save u battery time

    Intel for stibality and batt life
    AMD for pure power and gaming
    But nether will perform good in games if you have a crap card with no dedecated ram dont get a lappy with shared video ram even if your not ganna be gaming.....
    But its realy up to you and what your ganna be using the lappy for ....

    I would also suggest a laptop with a Pentium-M processor. (which is part of a centrino notebook) Centrino is just a standard that mainly includes a Pentium-M processor with integrated wireless networking, and maybe a few other things... If you're going to do any gaming, definitely get a decent video card. (i.e. Geforce 6600/6800 series or Radeon X600/X800 series)

    The Turion 64 is AMD's version of the Intel M series of CPUs. I haven't read any reviews on comparisons....

    Check out the Acer 5002WLMI with a Turion 64 and 1GB of memory.

    Turion gives good battery life and is 64 bit. Plus AMD rocks ^^

    if you want intel, get a pentium 4, p4s are power hogs, but i think the mobile ones won't eat as much power as regular ones.

    I'd get the new amd mobile processor, i heard some good things, but if you're not concerned with battery life, get an amd64 :p

    There are two basic kinds of major laptop roles.

    1. Laptops as mobile computing devices. Battery power and general desktop apps, with occasional DVD watching. For these laptops, you want a Centrino (Pentium M) laptop. Period. AMD is still playing catch-up here.

    2. Laptops as desktop replacement devices. Here the laptop will mainly spend it's time on a desk, perhaps moving from one desk to another but generally being plugged in the whole time. These kinds of laptops are essentially ultra-small-form-factor. Here you should get the same thing you want in a desktop PC, which will either be a P4 or an AMD/AMD64. Personally, I would avoid any P4-based laptop simply because they consume so much power and generate so much heat it almost precludes any form of limited mobile computing. A high end P4 will easily go through a high-capacity battery before you can play a 2 hour DVD (playing a DVD is one of the most power-demanding tasks for a laptop, primarily because of the power the DVD drive itself uses and the video and audio decoding the processor does).

    this may seem a lil dumb...... but i would pay good money to see someone put a graphics card into a lappy :D

    is hard drive speed important the ones i have been looking at have 5400 or 4200rpm

    Yes, very important, the faster the better.

    I'm no laptop expert but I think the fastest is 5400 RPM.

    As laptops aren't really as "upgradeable" or as user-serviceable as a desktop, I would suggest you get the best components you can afford.

    A lot of manufacturers use desktop chips in laptops to save money and increase power, however they have issues with heat and battery life.

    Make sure the CPU isn't just a "standard" desktop chip.
