"Page Cannot Be Displayed" on any website EXCEPT for schools own two websites.

Dell laptop, XP, SP2, connects wirelessly to cable modem/WAP via built-in wifi. Can access University's webmail and also access the schools own site. Any other website doesn't display.

Can connect to AIM with no problems.

So connectivity is not a problem. Wireless is working fine, connects to router fine, and obviously is connecting to the net if AIM is working.

So could it be an IE problem? We tried a few fixes that I found from searching older threads, but none seemed to work.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

    Perhaps the hosts table?

Is this the school's network you are accessing?

Just as a check, have you tried an alternative browser?

Have you attempted to browse via IP instead? For instance Majorgeeks.com is: http://67.19.72.101/

Thanks theefool. We already tried deleting the HOSTS file, but apparently that wasn't the problem.

We'll try browsing by IP address.

Also, try turning off any firewall, you may have.

Or instead of wireless, try connecting via a wired connection.

I don't think the connection is the problem though, because it can access AIM.

Also, browsing by IP generates "Internet Explorer can not open the search page". I'm guessing the problem must be with IE.

Some schools are set up for using a proxy server and sometimes more then 1 server. Connecting to different servers can allow or disallow different options including access rights. I would suggest trying to connect at a free hotspot somewhere like Panara bread or something and see if the problem exists there.

A quick test to see if DNS is working, is to see if you can PING majorgeeks.com

The ping reply could be bad, but if the domain majorgeeks.com can be resolved with the IP, then this could lead to other steps.

BIG, HUGE, question. Do other individuals have the same issue you have?

    Ping worked. Four replies.

So ping worked, but browsing by IP didn't. So I don't think it's a DNS problem. Also, others sharing the same connection are not having similar issues.

    No firewall is being used.
