    Hey all,

I was telling a friend of mine about my recent malware woes and he told me that he got a popup telling him his computer was infected with spyware and he bought the program to fix it...Pest Trap.

I said, "Sorry dude, but that IS the spyware. You got conned."

I'm going to help him soon with fixing his system up. He knows nothing about virus protection & didn't even know what spyware was. I feel bad that he shelled out $$ to a bogus company.

Do you think the best thing is to run his system through the steps in the spware removal sticky? Or now that he paid for and has this thing on his system, is it worse than not buying into it?

    Thanks!

Thank you chaslang, I will give it a shot.

I can't even imagine how much money these terrible fakeware programs are making off of people. Eveyone has hear about virus infections, not everyone is familiar with spyware/malware.

    You're welcome.

They should be by now. It has had many appearances on TV & radio shows now and is always in the newspaper too.

So I was able to help with the PC tonight, but only had time to run a Ad-Aware & Spybot scan...oh my. Major infections of all types.

The Ad-Aware scan came up with 721 objects!!

There is a lot that I those programs couldn't remove. However, the biggest issue is that I can get XP Service Pack 2 to install. I have it downloaded, but the install won't complete, I get an error message. Could malware be preventing this install from happening?

Do not try to install SP2 while a PC still has malware. That could cause more problems than the malware itself. Finishing ALL the cleaning procedure steps and attach the logs requested in steps 6 & 7. Make sure you run ALL steps in the READ ME.
