It came from cnet, but seems to have had a few other programs attached to it.

I attached the logs I could get; TDSSKiller didn't find anything, and HitmanPro says that my license ran out (I downloaded it earlier this month and couldn't find in the uninstall programs tool to take it off my computer).

We old ask you to run the free trial and run a scan which will always work. We do not ask you to fix anything with it anyway. Run a scan and attach the logs.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BackgroundContainer] "C:\windows\system32\Rundll32.exe" "C:\Users\Snake eyes\AppData\Local\Conduit\BackgroundContainer\BackgroundContainer.dll",DllRun
    O4 - Startup: MyPC Backup.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyPC Backup\MyPC Backup.exe
    O4 - Startup: Update Tool Notifier.exe
    O23 - Service: Computer Backup (MyPC Backup) (BackupStack) - Just Develop It - C:\Program Files\MyPC Backup\BackupStack.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    MyPC Backup
    QuickShare

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Well, for starters, I don't have the sweetpacks for a homepage anymore! I couldn't find a log for MGtools/analyse.exe--I only have the old one that I already attached. I couldn't uninstall PC Tools or QuickShare. :(

Thanks so much for your help!

Try uninstalling those programs with Revo Uninstaller, see if that works.

After doing so, do this: (as requested) Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

When trying to uninstall QuickShare with Revo Uninstaller, I get this error message: "The path 'C:\Users\Snake eyes\AppData\Local\Temp\Smartbar\LinkuryInstaller.msi' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'LinkuryInstaller.msi' in a folder from which you can install the produce QuickShare."

Which is the result of clicking OK to this: "The feature you are trying to use s on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'LinkuryInstaller.msi' in the box below" -- which offers a dropdown menu with no other options. I can't find a way around it.

MyPC Backup doesn't show up in Revo Uninstaller, although I have an icon on my desktop--should I use Hunter mode?

Sorry about the log--I was tired and I guess my eyes skipped that line. Here it is. Thanks again.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Delete this if you see it:
    C:\Users\Snake eyes\AppData\Local\Temp\Smartbar

Explain how things are running. Still okay?

The registry addition was successful! :)

Finding the Smartbar folder was not. :( I checked to make sure that hidden files/folders are visible, and they are.

Things are running well. The popups are gone and I haven't seen the "sweetpacks" search engine at all since yesterday.

    OK! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Great, thank you. I'm currently installing a better firewall, and have hopefully learned that "it'll be fine" is not a good reason to download suspicious programs.

I really appreciate that you do this for free. Is there anything you need promoted (or something like that) as a way to return the favor?

I am so glad you are all sorted. As a return favour, you can just mention us to all your friends or family who ever have troubles. :)
