Is it normal for the females mother or father to be in the room during childbirth?

Seems a little weird to me, I wouldn't like my parents there if I were fully exposed but I'd love to hear other opinions, especially any experiences.

    Thanks:)

Each of my three sisters has had two children. My mother was in the room for two of them, just outside the room for two of them, and in the waiting room for the other two. Which ones those are depend on which sister (oldest had her in the room, second in the hall, and third in the waiting room). I wouldn't want my mother there, but then I don't want her there for any other medical procedure I've had, either. She's a little bit nuts. LOL

Thanks:) So whatever works, if the female wants support it's fine?

The other aspect I guess is the intimacy issue, I imagine it can be a pretty intimate, emotional experience for a couple as they enjoy the fruits of their labour :-D So in that respect would a third wheel feel like an intrusion?

Not directed at you Tibbs but feel free to weigh in.

I would think it depends on the woman giving birth. If she wants her parent(s) there, then they can be. Unless of course they don't want to be, I guess. Although I also think the other person in the couple should have a say as well, because maybe he/she doesn't want the grandparents there for that.

Me, I was always more than happy to wait down the hall. Or at my house. I don't need to see that. ;) :-D

    Definitely the diplomatic answer.

I haven't formed an opinion for myself yet. I'd still be in shock a girl thought my DNA was worthy lol And now a human I've created is gonna pop out, I need some nitrous just thinking about it:-D

    I've voted no BTW.

I'm with Tibbs in that I wouldn't want to be at anyone else's birth except for my own progeny. We have two kids (one of each) and had natural births for both, in which I assisted. Both births happened in a private birthing unit of a major hospital because if something goes wrong you need to have all the best facilities on hand and with immediate access.
Personally, also like Tibbs, I wouldn't want my or her parents present either as it is a very emotionally personal time and it is you and your wife's time to focus on establishing your very own new family and enjoy this milestone moment in your own lives. Support of grand parents, aunties and uncles is great and this is should be part of your child's growing up experience to show them where they fit into the bigger family picture but I feel relatives should play no part in the starting of the pregnancy nor after at the birth as these are you and your partner's very private times.:cool

Of course everyone's situation is different and we have a friend who had her abusive relationship break up whilst she was pregnant so, for support, had her sister and mother present at the birth. Turned out her sister was very helpful and supportive but her mother just used this deeply emotional time to score cheap shots running down the father, who was gone forever, and also passing judgement and lecturing her on her poor life choices. This was not the time or place to discuss these matters and so the memory of this experience has caused long standing enmity with her mother to the point where grandma and grandpa are not part of her or her son's life. Really sad for everyone :(

Hey Rikky if you do find someone you want to swap DNA with, then go to the birth coz in my case, our two births were the two most wonderful things I have ever done and are things I will never forget as long as I live.
Good luck looking and try before you buy ....... caveat emptor ;) rolleyes
