Parted Magic 2 released

Free partition tools are a bit thin on the ground, and it's a bit hard to justify paying for the excellent Acronis Disk Manager or similar, if you're only going to use it once or twice.

Linux to the rescue - again

Parted Magic is similar to the commercial Partition Magic, but based on open source software - so it's free

It comes in the form of a 'live CD' i.e you have to boot from it, to use it

You can use it for making partitions on a new HD, resize your existing HD without losing data, and obviously because it's based on Linux software, you can also use it to create Linux partitions, which seems to be the biggest stumbling block for people wanting to try Linux.

It's currently at the top of the list at www.distrowatch.com and comes in a 42 MB ISO file, which you have to burn to CD before using it. But for people reading this in the future putting "Parted Magic" in Google should steer you in the right direction.

I'm very surprised none of the earlier versions have featured on MajorGeeks, because this is a very useful tool for Windows users.

Parted Magic is a must have piece of software IMO, and the latest version also includes Firefox and other tools

 

Hmmmm.... interesting. I've tried GParted and had absolutely no luck using it. I don't really remember, but I know it was super user UN-friendly. Luckily I burned it to a CDRW so I didn't waste the disc. Hopefully this 'Parted Magic' is more user friendly. It's been my experience (yes, very limited experience) with Linux, that it really isn't geared for the un-adventurous. And if you're REALLY comfortable with Windows and GUIs for software and driver installation, then Linux can be a real handful.... hopefully this app will attempt to overcome the Linux affair with command line operations....
