Partition Problems

    I have a pentium III that I want to install Linux on. Currently I have a partitioned hard drive one side has winXP and the other win98 I am trying to wipe the 98 and install linux is this possible if so how. I don't want to mess with the xp sidfe until I get my new computer. any help would be appreciated :) Thanks oh and where is the best place to download a linux kernel?

    Also if anyone needs any more info, I am new to this, I would be happy to give it this is more for me to toy around with linux than anythimg else
