After several failed attempts using Disc Director Suite (in normal and recovery boot modes) to resize a partition it just won't work. Is it possible that my hard disc has some sort of block or lock on the partition sizes?

    What does ide/sata mean?

The hard drive is maybe 4 years old.

Drive set up with fdisc? I don't know.

Is it version 9, or, 10.
In this review,-version 10, its workings are explained fairly clearly, and the next review on the link deals with version 9.

Having used partition magic , regularly, it appears very similar.
Although it would appear to work on any setup, it is something that does need a little knowledge, really.
IDE is the older Hard Drive , connected to by wide ribben leads , and Sata is the newer hard drive, which uses a slim single data lead.
With sata drives, sometimes ther can be problems installing, as some motherboards will not recognise them without the motherboards own sata driver, usually downloaded to a floppy disk, and inserted when installing Windows- mostly XP will install with its own drivers, - but not always.
If you have XP installed, then it should not matter, whether IDE, or, Sata.
Some Partition software does not like fdisk (partition magic does not) -

If you read through the link, and down the right hand side, you will see that the reviewer had the 80gb , same as you.
4 years old hard drive is worth checking with XP'S chkdsk

Of course, if you have a Dell, or, similar pc, Dell has its own setup, and you may have difficulty, because of it.- unless you do a backup to a dvd/cd, and then format the hard drive to erase manufacturers peculiarity.

    Version 10.

Is there a way to determine if fdisk was used?

I am trying to get a refund for the program. I checked their support forum and there are a multitude of threads about various functions not working, especially partitioning work.

I think I will take my PC to a tech and have him do it.
