    I have

    Nvidia TNT2 M64
    1.2 gigahertz
    192 mbs of ram
    win 98 se

I want to know if there is a way to put a pass word on it. I have one on the screen saver but all you have to do is turn off the computer and let it restart to bypass it. I want a password on start up so it will not let any one restart my computer to bypass my screen saver password. As always Thanks...BanC

Click on "Start" then "Settings" then "Control Panel" then "Users". A wizard will take you through the process of adding a password for access to the machine.

You could also set a password in your BIOS that comes up as soon as the PC is powered on. Then put a password on the BIOS setup and no one should be able to get into your computer without doing a BIOS reset.

And if that doesn't work, I think that I would just ask them to come over and find out what they are so interested in and show them.

    BUT REMEMBER ...

Unlike WinXP or NT, your passwords can easily be deleted, and the system will start up as if there were none (sorry to say). Win98 wasn't meant to have solid security.

All one has to do is do a search for *.pwl, delete them, and that's the end of that. The most safe password protection (without a 3rd party program) is the Bios settings. But, as noted in the posts above, a reset of that will get around it.

You don't even have to do that in Windows 9x, just click cancel on the logon ;)
